THE PREPS : Girls’ Basketball Roundup : La Quinta Beats El Modena, 80-28

Donna Gondringer scored 28 points and had 17 rebounds, each personal season-highs, to lead the La Quinta High School girls’ basketball team to an 80-28 victory over El Modena Saturday night in the first round of the La Quinta Basketball tournament.

Gondringer, a 6-2 center, helped La Quinta (5-3) to its season-high in total points.

La Quinta’s three losses were to county powers Brea-Olinda, El Toro and Mission Viejo.

La Quinta’s Amy Jalewalia, a 6-1 sophomore, had 16 points, 12 rebounds and 8 steals. Guard Cindy Kollar had 6 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists.

La Quinta, which will play Villa Park at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the second round, led, 42-13, at halftime. The Aztecs had 10 players score.

El Modena plays Troy at 4:30 p.m. Monday in the consolation bracket.

In other La Quinta Tournament games:

Valley Christian 58, South Torrance 33--Forward Tanya Zwagerman scored 20 points and Kim Vanzee added 13 to lead the Crusaders. Valley Christian plays Santa Ana Valley at 6 p.m. Monday in the second round. South Torrance plays Los Amigos at 3 p.m. Monday.

Santa Ana Valley 57, Los Amigos 44--Santa Ana Valley broke open a close game by outscoring Los Amigos, 14-2, in the third quarter.

Villa Park 40, Troy 37--Villa Park trailed, 22-11, at halftime, but got balanced scoring to win. Lori Matsuoha, a sophomore guard, had eight points to lead Villa Park. Troy was led by Shelly Adams, who had 19.

In the Costa Mesa Tournament:

Cypress 52, San Clemente 41--Shawn Murakoshi scored 18 points and Stacie Kosaka added 10 to lead Cypress. San Clemente had four players score eight points. Cypress plays Chino at 8 p.m. Monday. San Clemente plays Costa Mesa at 1:30 Monday.

Chino 55, Costa Mesa 38--Serena Murillo scored 28 points and Michelle Meanor had 14 to lead Chino. Costa Mesa was led by Sue Nuchterlein’s 14 points.

Ocean View 58, Estancia 38--Jenny Albright scored 20 points and Erika Whistler 14 to lead Ocean View in the opening-round victory. Shannon Suzuki scored 11 points for Estancia.

Capistrano Valley 71, North Torrance 31--Heather Schoeny scored 18 points to lead the Cougars, who had four players score in double figures. Holly Anderson scored 16, Lainie Spence 12 and Julie Swain 10 for Capistrano Valley.

Cerritos 65, Woodbridge 51--Gina Dowlin scored a game-high 26 points to lead Cerritos. Shannon Haraga scored 15 and Tina Griffith 11 for Cerritos. Kathy Millat scored 15 and Lisa Whren had 12 for Woodbridge.

Palos Verdes 47, Canyon 26--Heather Burger scored 21 points and teammate Mary Mahoney added 14 to lead Palos Verdes. Kari Erkenbrack scored 10 for Canyon.

In the Marina-Edison Tournament:

El Toro 70, Long Beach Wilson 51--Elaine Youngs, the Chargers’ high scoring post player, sat out with an ankle injury, but El Toro still won easily.

Cindy Walker, a senior forward, and Rae Andrews, a senior guard, had 21 points apiece for El Toro (11-0). El Toro plays Fountain Valley Monday. Rosie Luevanos scored 23 for Wilson (0-5).

Fountain Valley 55, Katella 37--Melayne Green, a senior center, scored a game-high 14 points to lead the Barons (6-4). Guard Stacey Hisaka added 12 for Fountain Valley. Katella (4-6) was paced by forward Stacy Johnson’s 12 points.

Edison 51, Savanna 32--Guard Stephanie Moorman led the Chargers with 22 points. Krisden Tanabe, a junior forward, came off the bench to score 14 points for the Chargers (9-3).

Edison broke open the game with a 25-point third quarter, extending a 16-6 halftime lead to a 41-15 advantage. Forward Karena Lee scored 10 points for Savanna (6-5).

Mission Viejo 48, Foothill 41--Tricia Hill had 14 points and Tina Ranker 13 for Mission Viejo. The Knights held guard Tricia Stringam to a season-low 8 points, but the Diablos (9-2) still won.

Guard Ashley Selman scored a game-high 16 points for Foothill (3-5).

Huntington Beach 58, Valencia 39--Tami Chick, a senior post player, scored 21 points and Stefanie Pemper, a senior guard, had 19 for the Oilers (6-4).

Lauren Rich and Nancy Amoroso each scored 13 points for Valencia (5-3).

Mater Dei 48, Esperanza 34--Forward Kelly O’Brien scored 14 to lead the Monarchs’ balanced attack. Mater Dei (8-3) jumped out to a 16-7 first quarter lead and were never threatened.

Esperanza (4-6) was paced by Guard Jennifer Harney’s 13 points.

Marina 58, Loara 31--The Vikings outscored the Saxons, 20-6, in the third quarter to break open a close game.

Dee Dee Stigar scored 16 points to pace Marina (9-2). Dawn Charroin added 10 for the Vikings.

Noelle Plack, a senior center, had 12 points to lead Loara (6-4).

Los Alamitos 57, Magnolia 36--The Griffins took a 28-17 halftime lead and extended it to 50-25 at the end of the third quarter.

Diane Sands scored 22 points and Jennifer Ensley added 16 for the Griffins (4-3).

Dawne Borum scored 16 points for Magnolia (6-3).
