Orange Tournament : Fountain Valley Loses First Game

Fountain Valley High School, the last remaining undefeated team in Orange County entering the quarterfinals of the Orange Holiday tournament, fell from the unbeaten ranks Tuesday night, losing to Capistrano Valley, 50-43, in Chapman College’s Hutton Sports Center.

Capistrano Valley (9-4) built a 30-17 lead in the first half and then withstood a frantic rally by the Barons in the final quarter to reach the semifinals at 6:50 tonight against Lakewood.

The Barons (8-1) cut the big deficit to four points with 1:31 remaining after center Kevin Anderson scored on an eight-foot jump shot in the key. But it was the closest Fountain Valley ever got against the taller Cougars.

Jim Waikle, Capistrano Valley’s 7-foot center, dominated play in the middle. He scored 14 points, had 10 rebounds and blocked 10 shots in one of his most impressive performances of his career.

“I’ve seen him (Waikle) play three or four times and that’s as well as I’ve seen him play,” said Dave Brown, Fountain Valley coach. “He was either blocking shots or forcing us to change shots. We had to take a lot of outside shots because of him.”

Fountain Valley started slowly, falling behind by 15 points at halftime. Todd Marinovich, Capistrano Valley’s fine shooting forward, had 12 points in the first half, including two three-point shots in the first quarter.

But Marinovich went cold in the second half, missing all six of his attempts, and the Cougars’ offense was practically nonexistent.

“Todd is the key to our team,” said Mark Thornton, Capistrano Valley coach. “When he shoots well and big Jim is playing well inside, we’re as good as anybody.

“I thought we had a great first half and then lacked the killer instinct in the second half. We need to learn to put teams away.”

Lakewood 71, Fullerton 48--The Lancers (9-2) overpowered Fullerton inside with cousins Brian Camper (12 points) and Victor Camper (16 points) overshadowing the play of Fullerton center Allan Lewis. Lewis scored 10 points and had 10 rebounds, but picked up two fouls in the first minute of play and wasn’t a factor in the first half when Lakewood opened a 36-25 lead.

Dominguez 69, Kennedy 61--The Dons (6-4) outscored Kennedy, 22-4, in the third quarter to erase a 35-25 halftime deficit. Forward Dijon Bernard scored 10 points in the third-quarter rally to push Dominguez into the semifinals at 8:30 tonight against Saddleback. Maurice Keith of Kennedy led all scorers with 23 points.

Saddleback 57, Santa Clara 50--Forward Gylan Dottin scored two consecutive baskets, including a driving baseline bank shot with 2:24 remaining for a 51-48 lead and the Roadrunners (10-2) went to gain the win. Saddleback guard Craig Marshall led all scorers with 23 points, making 7 of 11 field goal attempts and 9 of 12 free throw shots.

El Modena 63, Orting 37--Guard Brian Bullock scored 10 points in the third quarter, including two three-point shots, and the Vanguards advanced to the consolation semifinals at 12:20 today against Orange Lutheran.

Orange Lutheran 59, Foothill 49--The Lancers made 8 of 13 free throw attempts in the last quarter to upset Foothill. Geoff MacArthur scored 17 points and teammate Jason Neben added 11 points for the Lancers.

Westminster 61, Palm Beach Gardens 53--Center Chris Tower scored 26 points to lead the Lions. Westminster will meet Sunset League rival Marina in the consolation semifinals at 2 today.

Marina 69, Orange 41--The Vikings (11-2) outscored Orange, 22-9, in the second quarter after trailing, 15-14, at the end of the first quarter. Guard Dave Yamate scored 8 of his 18 points in the second quarter and teammate Steve Guild added six points in the period. Orange forward John Rodriguez led all scorers with 20 points.
