Toney Is Out a Minimum of 5 Games After 76ers Suspend Him Without Pay

The Philadelphia 76ers suspended guard Andrew Toney on Monday for violating team regulations.

Toney, who is in his eighth season, left the team on its recent Western trip to return to Philadelphia, saying he had aggravated chronic foot problems.

“It’s unfortunate that with the patience exhibited by the 76ers’ organization that this action would be necessary at this time,” General Manager John Nash said in a statement. “Although Andrew has been playing with more efficiency of late, no player is exempt from the rules and regulations of the team. Under the circumstances, I feel that this is the proper action to take at this time. I am not at liberty to elaborate upon the situation.”

The suspension means Toney must sit out a minimum of five games and that he will not be paid.

Toney played 29 minutes in last week’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers, then returned to Philadelphia before Saturday night’s game against the Seattle SuperSonics.

“He told me he had called (team orthopedist) Ray Moyer after the Portland game because he had hurt his foot,” Coach Matt Guokas said. “He said he asked Moyer what he should do and that Moyer told him to either sit on the bench (against Seattle) or come home. He went home.”
