San Diego High Schools : San Dieguito Is Target as Poway Finds Its Shot

The Poway High School boys’ basketball team snapped out of a shooting slump in the second half of its Palomar League game against San Dieguito Wednesday night and went on to a 74-53 victory.

Poway had hit only 29% (19 for 65) of its shots in a 62-58 loss to Vista Friday and made only 31% (10 for 32) in the first half against San Dieguito while taking a 26-24 lead.

But in the second half, the No. 7 Titans (11-3, 2-1) hit 20 of 31 (65%) to pull away. Dave Delaney scored 8 of his team-high 20 points in the fourth quarter when Poway outscored San Dieguito, 26-8.

“We were starting to get a bit tentative with our shooting, and that’s not good,” said Neville Saner, Poway coach. “But we finally got going in the second half.”

Adam Jones scored 19 points and had 9 rebounds for Poway, and Jason Jones added 13 points. Jack Minger scored 24 points for San Dieguito (6-8, 0-2).

In other Palomar League games:

Torrey Pines 76, Vista 51--Courtie Miller scored 16 points and Kevin Flanagan had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the No. 1 Falcons (17-0, 3-0) at Torrey Pines. Torrey Pines led, 32-26, at halftime and pulled away, 20-9, in the third quarter. Tom Underwood scored 13 points for Torrey Pines and Neal Pollard added 11. Clarence Reese led Vista (8-6, 1-2) with 12.

Mt. Carmel 61, Orange Glen 46--Eric Olander scored 15 points and Chris Conrad and Jeff Hinsley 14 each for Mt. Carmel (9-6, 1-2) at home. Orange Glen fell to 5-9 and 0-2.

AVOCADO LEAGUE

Oceanside 67, Ramona 49--Alvin McGee scored 20 points and Oceanside (7-5, 3-0) broke open a tight game in the fourth quarter at Ramona. Donald Barner scored 19 points for Oceanside, which led, 43-41, after three quarters. Nate Hollingsworth led Ramona (6-9, 1-2) with 18 points, and Chad Nelson added 15.

El Camino 80, Rancho Buena Vista 61--Scott Oatsvall had 23 points and 12 rebounds for El Camino (10-3, 3-0) at home. Lee Cobb added 15 points, 9 rebounds and 8 blocked shots for the Wildcats, who led, 40-21, at halftime. Todd Fellars scored 14 points for Rancho Buena Vista (0-10, 0-3) and Al Aliipule added 11.

Carlsbad 62, San Pasqual 54--Ron Helms scored 18 points and Paul Bassett 17 at Carlsbad (5-4, 2-1). Luke Pettorini added 16 points for Carlsbad, which led, 50-36, after three quarters. San Pasqual fell to 1-7 and 0-3.

Escondido 57, San Marcos 53--Scott Baldwin scored 20 points for Escondido (9-4, 2-1) at San Marcos. Matt Barrick scored 18 points for San Marcos (1-7, 1-2), which trailed by 14 at halftime, then pulled within two in the fourth quarter but never got closer.

METRO CONFERENCE

Hilltop 52, Mar Vista 40--Mark Dirksen had 23 points and 13 rebounds at Hilltop (7-10, 3-1).
