Angela Burnham, the only freshman ever to win the state championship in the 100-meter dash, is one of eight Rio Mesa High athletes entered in the prestigious Sunkist Invitational indoor track meet Jan. 22 at the Sports Arena.
Burnham, a junior who ran 11.77 over 100 meters as a freshman, will compete in the 500-yard run at the Sunkist and hopes to improve on last year's third-place finish.
Also competing in the 500-yard run will be Simone Cain of Hueneme High. Cain has run 55.23 in a 400-meter race.
Travis Cooksey, a senior at Rio Mesa, is the fastest returning 800-meter runner in the state. He is entered in the 880-yard run at the Sunkist meet.
Other participants include Desiree Joubert of Westlake and Amy Nesbitt of Newbury Park, who will run in the girls' 880. Jena Haggenmiller of Thousand Oaks is entered in the two-mile race and Camarillo's Jessica Craven, Moorpark's April Beaver and Westlake's Jennifer Feller will compete in the mile.
High school events begin at 4:35 p.m. and world class competition begins at 7 p.m.
