13 Glendale Players Accept Scholarships

Kicker Sal Velasco and 12 other Glendale College football players have made commitments to play for four-year schools next season.

Velasco, a second-team All-American, has signed with Hawaii. Last season he converted all of his extra-point attempts and missed only two field-goal attempts.

Wide receiver Rocky Palamara, Glendale’s most valuable player and an honorable mention All-American, has signed with Cal State Fullerton.

“We’re really pleased that just about every one of our sophomores has found a place to play football next year,” Coach Jim Sartoris said. “We told them that if they did the job in the classroom and on the field, they’d get the opportunity. That’s what it’s all about from a coach’s perspective--helping the individual get the opportunities.”

Three players have signed with the University of the Pacific: Louis Greggs, a 5-10, 185-pound defensive back; Jim Hazboun, a 6-3, 250-pound offensive lineman; and Jerry DiMaggio, a 6-0, 220-pound linebacker.

Ara Derderian, a 6-3, 275-pound offensive lineman, and linebacker Steve Jones will play at San Jose State. Quarterback Chris Smith and tight end Roger Gorke will play at UC Santa Barbara, while 6-6, 240-pound tight end Marcus Lester has signed with the University of Arizona. Ray Brackin, a 6-1, 220-pound linebacker, will join offensive guard Greg Little and strong safety Dave Benefield at Cal State Northridge.

Glendale had a school-record 18 players sign with four-year schools last season.
