Woodbridge High School’s 39-point Pacific Coast League victory over Trabuco Hills Friday night at Trabuco Hills was many things at many times.

It was brilliant. It was convincing. It was ugly. It was Woodbridge 89, Trabuco Hills 50.

Woodbridge (14-5 overall, 6-0 in league play) had superior size and speed and took full advantage of both Friday night.

The Warriors built a 24-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and, although Trabuco Hills (11-9, 2-4) cut the lead to 35-25 at halftime with a strong inside game, Woodbridge was in command the entire way.

Rick Swanwick, Trabuco Hills’ burly 6-foot 10-inch junior center, was the only Mustang able to match up against the Warriors.

His six straight points in the second quarter helped the Mustangs rally. Swanwick finished with eight points, but was shut out in the second half.

Adam Keefe, Woodbridge’s 6-9 center, scored 15 of his game-high 26 points to lead a third-quarter onslaught that pushed the lead to 61-33. Woodbridge outscored Trabuco Hills, 26-8, in the quarter.

“At the end of the first half we weren’t patient,” said Keefe, who also had five blocked shots. “We can get really good shots when we’re patient.”

In the third quarter, Woodbridge had loads of patience and got plenty of easy shots.

Guards Rob Lee and Derrick Odum scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. All but one Woodbridge player scored.

The Warriors outscored Trabuco Hills, 28-17, even in the fourth quarter when the game was all but over. Amir Rounaghi, a reserve guard, had 9 points and helped to keep the lead near the 30-point range in the fourth quarter.

John Barnes, a senior forward, led Trabuco Hills with 16 points.

“I think we played really well,” Woodbridge Coach Bill Shannon said. “I think I’d have to credit our defense for the most part.”

Costa Mesa 55, Laguna Beach 52--Costa Mesa rallied from a six-point deficit in the final minutes for the victory at home. Trailing, 50-44, the Mustangs (5-14, 2-4) got a layup by Greg Ertel, a three-point field goal by Paul Kos and four free throws by Tuan Vu . Kos finished with 19 points. John Trevino had 19 points for Laguna Beach (7-10, 4-2).

Laguna Hills 77, Orange 44--The Hawks made Coach Joe Reid’s debut as coach a successful one as guard Mike Smedes scored 16 of his 19 points in the first half. West German foreign exchange student Ollie Schwarz scored five points for Laguna Hills.
