SAN DIEGO — The University of San Diego and St. Mary’s, two teams that played the lowest-scoring game of the West Coast Athletic Conference basketball season here Wednesday night, will meet again at McKeon Pavilion in Moraga at 7:30 tonight.
St. Mary’s (11-5 overall, 3-2 in the WCAC) beat USD (8-10, 0-5) Wednesday, 41-40, on Al Lewis’ three-point jumper with 25 seconds to play.
USD shot 35% (17 for 48) from the field and attempted only one free throw. St. Mary’s wasn’t much better, hitting 42% (16 for 38) of its shots.
Both teams played sagging zone defenses, and neither side was able to get inside for easy baskets.
USD’s starting front line of Mike Haupt, Dondi Bell and Marty Munn was a combined 1 for 17 from the floor. St. Mary’s front line of Erick Newman, Dan Curry and Robert Haugen combined to shoot just 4 for 14.
“We’re always going to pack our defense in,” St. Mary’s Coach Lynn Nance said. “And they decided to pack it also on Wednesday. (Tonight’s) game could be different.”
