Four Valley-area high school football players have given verbal commitments to attend Pacific 10 Conference universities and a fifth will attend Rutgers, an independent.

J. J. Lasley of Crespi will attend Stanford, Sam Edwards of Reseda will attend Arizona, Vince Ferry of Alemany will attend Oregon and Chris Noonan of Chaminade will attend Cal. Doug Kavulich, a teammate of Noonan’s, has committed to Rutgers.

Lasley (6-2, 205) rushed for 928 yards and scored 14 touchdowns for the Celts, who advanced to the Big Five Conference semifinals. Lasley caught 17 passes for 195 yards (20.8 a catch) and was selected to California Football’s all-state academic and All-Del Rey League teams. He also started at linebacker.

Edwards (6-2, 185) had 14 interceptions in the past two seasons for Reseda, which won the City Section 2-A Division title in 1986 and lost in the final last season. Edwards was a first-team selection to The Times’ All-Valley, California Football magazine’s all-state, All-City Section and Cal-Hi Sports’ medium schools all-state teams.

Ferry (6-5, 235) caught 25 passes for 365 yards (13.5 a catch) and 5 touchdowns for Alemany. Ferry, also a defensive end-linebacker, was selected to The Times’ All-Valley and All-Del Rey League defensive teams. Ferry chose Oregon after visits to Oregon State, UTEP and Utah.

Chaminade’s Chris Noonan (6-2, 185), a California Football all-state medium schools and Times’ All-Valley kicker, will attend Cal. Noonan kicked 39 extra points and made 12 of 15 field-goal attempts for Chaminade, which advanced to the Desert-Mountain Conference final.

Kavulich, a 6-2, 240-pound offensive lineman, was a Times All-Valley lineman and the Santa Fe League lineman of the year.

Players can sign letters of intent Feb. 10.
