Boys’ Basketball : Hart Makes Its Point in a 115-49 Rout

Six players scored in double-figures to help Hart High set a school record for most points in a game in a 115-49 Foothill League victory over San Gabriel on Tuesday at Hart.

The previous record was 108 set in 1979.

Brian Allen scored a game-high 25 points to lead Hart, which improved to 11-8 overall and 3-4 in Foothill League play.

“Everything went right, “ Hart Coach Greg Herrick said. “It was one of those nights.

“I’m glad we set a school record, but more important, I’m glad we won.”

San Gabriel dropped to 3-16, 0-7.

Hart scored 34 points in the second quarter, the 10th-highest total in a quarter by a Southern Section team, and led, 63-24, at halftime. The Indians scored 52 points in the second half to break the record.

“No, we didn’t try to run up the score,” Herrick. “We would have scored more points in the fourth quarter.”

Hart’s pressure forced San Gabriel into 38 turnovers and the Indians scored mostly on transition baskets. Hart shot 54% (44 of 81) from the field.

Allen made 10 of 11 field-goal attempts and 5 of 5 free throws.

Quartz Hill 73, Canyon 50--Byron Moles scored a game-high 28 points and teammate Lee White added 19 points and 8 assists to lead first-place Quartz Hill in a Golden League game at home. Chris Schmitt led Canyon with 17 points.

Quartz Hill improved to 14-5, 7-0. Canyon dropped to 13-4, 2-5.

Calabasas 66, Nordhoff 55--Second-place Calabasas (11-10, 5-1) clinched a playoff berth with a Frontier League victory at home over third-place Nordhoff. Howie Gaynor led the Coyotes with a career-high 24 points, including 5 of 7 three-point shots.

Calabasas trailed, 24-22, at halftime, but rallied with six three-point shots. Gaynor made three and Sean Obusek, who finished with 15 points, also made three as Calabasas took a 48-34 lead into the fourth quarter.

Jon Drezner added 13 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals for Calabasas. Nordhoff dropped to 10-10, 5-1.

Burroughs 82, Schurr 70--Paul Chavez, one of the Foothill League’s leading scorers, led Schurr with 28 points in a win over visiting Burroughs. Thai Ngo added 21 points for second-place Schurr (16-3, 6-1).

Four Burroughs players--Jeff Barrett (17 points), Dan Murphy (12), Marcelino Casal (11) and Eddie Hill (11) scored in double figures. Burroughs dropped to 8-12, 1-6.

Montclair Prep 85, Village Christian 44--Montclair Prep remained tied for first in the Alpha League with L. A. Baptist with a win at Village Christian. Craig Handschu, who played only 2 1/2 quarters, led the Mounties (12-6, 6-1) with 24 points. He added six assists. Center David Sanger scored 12 points and had 15 rebounds. Duane Johnson added 9 rebounds and 6 assists.

Russ Henzie led Village Christian (6-13, 2-5) with 13 points.

L. A. Baptist 62, Marshall Fundamental 58--James Hoback scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and the Knights made 13 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter to win the Alpha League game at Marshall Fundamental.

Mike Wise and Mike Guthrie each scored 14 points for L. A. Baptist, which maintained a tie for first place with a 6-1 league record. Wise added eight assists and Guthrie had eight rebounds. The Knights are 14-4 overall.

Marshall Fundamental is 10-8, 4-3.

Cathedral 56, Harvard 46--Rick Osterloh scored 12 points and Scott Wood added 10 for Harvard in a Santa Fe League game at Harvard. Harvard dropped to 10-7, 8-3 and Cathedral improved to 10-1 in league play.

St. Genevieve 68, Pater Noster 52--Mike Walker had 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Valiants in a Santa Fe League game at Pater Noster.

Ron Nielsen added 10 points and 15 rebounds, Mike Cassidy had 9 points and 10 assists, and Chad Russell had 12 points for St. Genevieve (9-10 overall, 5-6). Pater Noster is 2-15, 2-9.
