Girls’ Basketball : Couch Leads Bell-Jeff to Overtime Win

Carlyn Couch made two free throws with seven seconds remaining in overtime as Bell-Jeff High defeated Louisville, 48-47, in a San Fernando Valley League game Tuesday night at Louisville.

With the score tied, 42-42, Bell-Jeff’s Hanh Tran missed a free throw with no time remaining to force the game into overtime. The Guards outscored Louisville, 6-5, in the three-minute overtime period with Tran scoring four of her 11 points.

Couch also scored 11 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for the Guards (14-8, 6-2). Sarah Dancs added 10 points for Bell-Jeff.

Bell-Jeff led, 26-15, at halftime, but was outscored, 16-12, in the third period and 11-4 in the fourth as Louisville rallied to force the overtime period.

Becky Long of Louisville led all scorers with 16 points. She was the only Royal to score in double figures. Louisville dropped to 3-4 in league play.

Schurr 54, Burroughs 45--Cam Inouye scored a game-high 25 points and Kim Ikeda added 11 for Schurr in a Foothill League game at Burroughs. Debbie Penney led the Indians in scoring with 14 points and had eight rebounds. Quaif VanBenschoten added 10 points and had a game-high 14 rebounds. Schurr improved to 17-6, 7-0 in league play. Burroughs dropped to 16-5, 3-4.

Alhambra 54, Burbank 48 (OT)--Joann Lee scored 22 points for Alhambra, which outscored Burbank, 8-2, in overtime, in a Foothill League game at Alhambra. Jennifer Gomez led Burbank with 15 points. Karrie Parsons added 10 points and had 12 rebounds. Burbank dropped to 11-7, 3-4 in league play.

Montclair Prep 58, Village Christian 23--Charis Kubrin and Nikki Smith each scored 18 points to lead Montclair Prep (7-6, 3-3 in league play) to an easy Alpha League victory. Smith also had 14 rebounds. Village Christian is 0-7 in league play.

Hart 52, San Gabriel 27--Kim Posey and Nikki Brodowy both scored 14 points for Hart in the Foothill League game at San Gabriel. Sara Wilson grabbed 15 rebounds and Brodowy pulled down 13 for the Indians, 11-7, 4-3 in league play.
