It will take a lot more than a pulled leg muscle to slow down Crawford High School’s Lamont Grove.

Grove had 60 points and 22 rebounds to lead Crawford to City Central League victories over St. Augustine and Hoover.

In last Tuesday’s 79-73 victory over St. Augustine, he scored 36 points and had 13 rebounds but pulled a leg muscle.

“He practiced sparingly Wednesday and Thursday,” Coach John King said. “He was in a lot of pain, but he’s the kind of player (who) when you need it he really comes through.”

Grove had 24 points and 9 rebounds in a 77-54 victory over Hoover Friday.

“He’s playing really well,” King said. “It is kind of like how Lamont goes, we go.”

Grove, a senior transfer from South Bend, Ind., leads the county with a 27.4 scoring average.

SOCCER

The San Diego High School Cavers are tied for first in the latest San Diego Section 2-A soccer poll, thanks in large part to Manuel Rodriguez.

The sophomore scored two goals last Wednesday as the Cavers (12-2-1 overall, 5-0-1 in Central League) edged Hoover, 3-2, and then added two assists and a goal in a 4-2 defeat of Crawford Friday.

Rodriguez, who was named to the all-tournament team in the La Jolla Cup, scored three goals in a 3-0 victory over Lincoln Jan. 22.

“He can dribble, pass and shoot with both legs,” Coach Milton Hidalgo said. “And mentally, he’s way ahead of most high schoolers. He sees things develop before they happen.”

As a freshman, Rodriguez was named the Central League’s most valuable player and to the all-section team.
