Roundup : Torrey Pines Upset, 64-63, by Mt. Carmel

Torrey Pines High School, ranked No. 1 in The Times’ San Diego County Top 10, suffered its first boys’ basketball loss of the season Wednesday night, as Mt. Carmel won in overtime, 64-63.

Jason Mann scored on an eight-foot basket with three seconds remaining to give Mt. Carmel (12-8 overall, 4-4 Palomar League) the victory.

Mt. Carmel slowed its offense through most of the game.

In the fourth quarter, Mt. Carmel scored only six points and held Torrey Pines to 10.

With the game tied at 60-60, Mt. Carmel held the ball for the final 2:56 and missed a shot at the buzzer.

In overtime, Mt. Carmel scored twice, fell behind when Torrey Pines scored a three-pointer, and then won it on Mann’s shot.

Sophomore Shane Knight led Mt. Carmel with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Eric Olander added 18.

Courtie Miller had 22 points for Torrey Pines (22-1, 7-1).

In another Palomar League game:

San Dieguito 56, Fallbrook 44--Jack Minger scored 30 points to lead host San Dieguito (2-5, 8-11) past Fallbrook. Minger made 12 of 18 shots from the field and 6 of 7 free throws. Todd Adamson scored 16 points for Fallbrook (4-4, 6-10) and Mike West added 12.

El Camino 79, San Marcos 55--Lee Cobb scored 22 points, had nine rebounds and blocked three shots to spark fifth-ranked El Camino (15-4, 8-1) at San Marcos. Steve Carr scored 17 points for El Camino, including three three-point shots. San Marcos (3-14, 3-6) was led by Jay Kitti’s 12 points.

Escondido 77, San Pasqual 57--Paul Baldwin scored 33 points and Brooks Barnhard added 16 to lead No. 10 Escondido (7-2, 14-5) at home. Baldwin hit 13 of 19 shots, including five three-pointers. Eric Meek scored 15 points for San Pasqual (1-8, 2-12) and Andy Loveland added 14.

Ramona 71, Carlsbad 44--Ramona (10-11, 6-3) held Carlsbad (5-10, 2-7) to 14 points in the first half en route to the victory at home. Tony Newman led Ramona with 17 points and Luke Pettorini had 19 for Carlsbad.

Oceanside 59, Rancho Buena Vista 45--Alvin McGee scored 16 points and had 14 rebounds to lead host Oceanside (11-7, 7-2). Donald Barner and Dwayne Wilson added 12 points apiece for Oceanside. Al Aliipule and Junior Moi scored 10 points each for Rancho Buena Vista (2-7, 2-14).
