Utah St. 78, New Mexico St. 77--Dan Conway, who led all scorers with 27 points, scored a field goal and a free throw with nine seconds remaining to give the Utah State a win at Las Cruces, N.M.
New Mexico State led, 77-75, with 36 seconds remaining on a free throw by Willie Joseph, but Keith Hill missed a crucial one-and-one with 18 seconds left.
Conway, a 6-8 junior, took a pass inside the lane and was fouled by Joseph after making the basket.
Utah State is 13-6 and 8-2. It was the fifth one-point loss of the season for New Mexico State (12-11 and 4-6).
Backup Curtis Terrell, filling in for Steve McGlothlin, who is out with the chicken pox, scored a career-high 20 points and had a team-high 11 rebounds for New Mexico State.
