Girls’ Basketball Roundup : Laguna Beach Surprises Orange

Liz Stal scored 21 points, including 17 in the second half, as Laguna Beach High School defeated Orange, 45-40, Thursday night in a Pacific Coast League game at Orange.

The loss knocked Orange (8-8, 6-2 in league) out of a tie for first place with Woodbridge, which defeated Laguna Hills, 68-24.

Orange led by as many as five points in the first half, but Laguna Beach rallied to tie the score, 19-19, at halftime. Stal scored 12 points in the third quarter as Laguna Beach outscored Orange, 18-12.

The Artists (4-3 in league) extended the lead to as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter, but Orange closed to four back with three minutes left. Stal scored five points after that to turn back the Panthers.

Shannon Maurice scored 13 points for Laguna Beach. Alicia East had 15 points and 17 rebounds for Orange.

In other Pacific Coast League games:

Woodbridge 68, Laguna Hills 24--Kathy Millat and Randee Mahony each scored 14 points, as Woodbridge (19-5, 7-1) took sole possession of first place at Laguna Hills (4-12, 1-6). Woodbridge leads Orange by a game in the standings. Leading, 14-5, after the first quarter, Woodbridge outscored Laguna Hills, 23-7, to take a 37-12 halftime lead.

Costa Mesa 42, Trabuco Hills 27--Moe Moore scored 8 points and Kim Good and Sue Nuechterlein 7 each to lead host Costa Mesa (5-15, 4-4). Good also had 4 assists, 5 steals and 9 rebounds for Costa Mesa, which led, 25-13, at the half. Trabuco Hills is 1-7 in the league.

In the Angelus League:

Mater Dei 56, St. Paul 24--Kelly O’Brien led balanced scoring with nine points as Mater Dei remained undefeated in the league at St. Paul. Mater Dei (19-5, 8-0) led, 8-7, at the end of the first quarter, then outscored St. Paul, 20-5, to take a 28-12 halftime lead. Shannon Gray scored 14 points for St. Paul.

In the Century League:

Foothill 61, Villa Park 38--Ashley Selman had 25 points and 11 steals to lead Foothill (13-8, 8-0) at Villa Park. Tanya Fox scored 18 points for Foothill. DeAnna Hampaton scored 10 points for Villa Park.

Santa Ana 53, El Modena 51--With the score tied, 50-50, in the final minute, Trina Bruce made a layup and then, seconds later, a free throw to give host Santa Ana (9-8, 4-4) the victory. Bruce finished with 11 points and teammate Gracie Lopez scored 14. Rachel Lomax had 17 points for El Modena (11-12, 3-5).

Canyon 62, Santa Ana Valley 24--Lisa Iino scored 15 points to lead Canyon (13-7, 7-1). Keri Erkenbrack scored 11 points and Christa Ramirez scored 10 for Canyon. Francesca Rumps had 14 points for Santa Ana Valley (2-6 in league).

In the Empire League:

Los Alamitos 43, Esperanza 27--Jennifer Ensley scored 31 points to lead Los Alamitos (10-11, 4-4) at Esperanza. Jennifer Harney scored 10 points for Esperanza.

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 52, Sonora 26--Sabrina Welch had 18 points and 12 rebounds for Fullerton (14-6, 6-2) at Sonora. Fullerton gained a 17-6 first-quarter lead and increased that to 32-8 at halftime. Sharon Spadt and Jennifer Comstock each scored 11 points for Fullerton. Jennifer Moricado scored 10 points for Sonora.

In the Garden Grove League:

Rancho Alamitos 56, Bolsa Grande 35--Jenny Newsome scored 18 points to lead host Rancho Alamitos (9-9, 7-5). Shannon Morgan scored 14 and Frances Barba had 11 including a three-point basket for Rancho Alamitos. Liz Flores had 11, including a three-pointer for Bolsa Grande.

In the Olympic League:

Ontario Christian 58, Capistrano Valley Christian 41--Sophia Kollias scored 15 points and Mirna Daniels had 13 rebounds and 8 points for host Capistrano Valley Christian (6-11, 2-8).

Valley Christian 60, Orange Lutheran 18--Kim Klatt scored seven for Orange Lutheran (8-10, 4-6).

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 77, Savanna 26--Amy McDaniel had 25 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists to lead Brea-Olinda (23-1, 8-0) at Savanna. Brea-Olinda led, 17-13 the end of the first quarter, then outscored Savanna, 24-0, to take a 41-13 halftime lead. McDaniel, a sophomore, was eight for eight from the free-throw line and also made three three-point field goals. Tammy Blackburn scored 14 points and Tina Chiotti 12 for Brea-Olinda, ranked first in the Orange County coaches’ poll.

In the Sea View League:

University 52, Newport Harbor 47--Shelley Davis had 11 points 11 rebounds and Denise Jandara 10 points and 9 rebounds to lead University (11-8, 6-2) at Newport Harbor. University led, 24-21, at halftime, but outscored Newport Harbor, 12-8, in the third quarter. Tustin led by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter. Jenny Stucker scored 18 points and Stacey Giem 14 for Newport Harbor (2-6 in league).

In the Sea View League:

Estancia 56, Corona del Mar 45--Shawna Newbern 22 points, 11 steals, 9 rebounds and 6 blocked shots to lead Estancia (15-7, 6-2).
