Girls’ Basketball : Santa Ana Earns First Trip to Playoffs With 45-44 Win

Trina Bruce made a 10-foot jump shot with two seconds left to lift Santa Ana High School to a 45-44 victory over Santa Ana Valley Tuesday in a Century League girls’ basketball game at Santa Ana.

The victory cliches third place and the first playoff appearance in Santa Ana girls’ basketball history. Bruce finished with a game-high 21 points for Santa Ana (10-8, 5-4).

Santa Ana trailed by 18 in the third quarter and finally took the lead, 43-42, with 18 seconds left on a basket by Latanya Trotter. Santa Ana Valley’s Dominique Rumps was then fouled and made both ends of a one-and-one to give Santa Ana Valley a 44-43 lead with nine seconds left. Santa Ana then inbounded the ball to Bruce, who brought the ball up and made the winning basket.

In other Century League games:

Foothill 68, El Modena 33--Ashley Selman scored 11 points, had 7 rebounds, 9 assists and 9 steals for host Foothill (14-8, 9-0). Tanya Foxe had 18 points and 12 rebounds and Kristy Walker had 12 points and 15 rebounds for Foothill. El Modena is 11-13, 3-6.

Canyon 67, Villa Park 23--Lina Iino scored 18 points and had 12 rebounds, Keri Erkenbrack scored 13 points and Randi Pankratz added 11 to lead host Canyon (15-7, 8-1).

In the Empire League:

Los Alamitos 79, El Dorado 23--Los Alamitos outscored El Dorado, 23-6, in the first quarter and went on to victory at home. Diane Sands scored 28 points to lead Los Alamitos (11-8, 5-4).

Esperanza 50, Loara 39--Jennifer Harney scored 12 points for host Esperanza (13-12, 4-5).

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 91, Pacifica 20--Sue Paulson scored a career-high 29 points and had 8 assists for host La Quinta. Donna Gondringer had 14 points and 13 rebounds and Amy Jalewalia had 16 points and 8 rebounds for La Quinta (20-3, 13-0).

Los Amigos 49, Bolsa Grande 46 (OT)--Los Amigos outscored Bolsa Grande, 6-3, in overtime for the victory at Bolsa Grande. Amy Pearson scored 11 points to lead Los Amigos. Liz Flores scored 14 and Jennifer Tracey added 11 points and 15 rebounds for Bolsa Grande (9-12, 5-8).

Santiago 37, Garden Grove 32--Robin Caires scored 17 points and Carolyn Burns 10 rebounds for host Santiago (15-5, 10-3).

Fullerton 46, Sunny Hills 37--Jennifer Comstock and Sharron Spadt scored 12 points each for host Fullerton (15-6, 7-2).

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 84, Western 46--Tammy Blackburn scored 30 points and Kristen Blair and Cindy Gunn 15 each for Brea-Olinda (24-1, 9-0), which has won 14 in a row.

In the Sea View League:

Estancia 47, University 43--Shawna Newbern and Shannon Suzuki each scored 12 points and Christy Schwarz had 9 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals to lead Estancia (16-7, 7-2) at University. Shelly Davis scored 20 points for University.

Mission Viejo 63, Irvine 36--Tricia Stringam scored 20 points, Trisha Hill added 13 and Shannon Morgon 14 to lead host Mission Viejo (20-5, 8-1).

In the Sunset League:

Huntington Beach 54, Marina 43--Tami Chick scored 19 points and had 15 rebounds to lead the Oilers (14-8, 6-3) at home. Stefanie Pemper scored 15 and Jennifer Ambrose added 10 to help Huntington Beach. Dawn Charroin scored 11 points to lead Marina (20-4, 7-2).

Fountain Valley 57, Westminster 51--Stacey Hisaka scored 17 points and Melenie Green 15 to lead host Fountain Valley (15-10, 7-2). Shannon Bates had 15 points and Julie Ann Johnson 13 for Westminster.

Edison 49, Ocean View 42--Debbie Fischer scored 17 points, including a three-pointer from 40 feet as the third quarter ended, to give Edison a 36-35 lead. Kristen Tanabe and Wendy Sandstadt scored 10 each for Edison (18-7, 6-3).

Liberty Christian 53, California Lutheran 50--Lisa Whitney scored 18 points and had 18 rebounds to lead host Liberty Christian (17-1, 12-0).

Orange Lutheran 38, Capistrano Valley Christian 34--Pam Marty scored 14 points and Devon Koster 10 for host Orange Lutheran (9-10).
