College Basketball Roundup : North Carolina Beats N.C. State in Overtime

J.R. Reid and Scott Williams scored four points each in overtime to lead sixth-ranked North Carolina to a 75-73 victory over No. 16 North Carolina State in an Atlantic Coast Conference game Thursday night at Chapel Hill, N.C.

North Carolina led, 57-47, with 7:58 remaining in regulation and was still ahead by seven points with 1:30 remaining.

But N.C. State, which hit five three-point shots in the last 10 minutes, tied the score, 67-67, with 26 seconds left when Vinnie Del Negro converted an offensive rebound.

However, Reid hit an inside jumper 26 seconds into the overtime to put North Carolina ahead. Williams, a sophomore from Wilson High School in Hacienda Heights, capped the overtime with a dunk with 10 seconds left to give North Carolina a 75-71 lead.

Steve Bucknall and Ranzino Smith led North Carolina with 14 points apiece. Reid and Williams added 13 for the Tar Heels, 17-3 overall and 6-2 in ACC games.

Freshman Rodney Monroe scored 19 points to lead N.C. State (15-5 and 5-3).

Brigham Young 78, Wyoming 69--Things are back on track as the Cougars beat the Cowboys in a Western Athletic Conference game at Provo, Utah.

The Cougars, who lost for the first time this season last Saturday, to Alabama Birmingham, have won two straight. They defeated Miami (Fla.) Tuesday night.

The Cowboys, who made the NCAA’s final 16 last season and returned all five starters, had high hopes for this season. And things were going well until they got into conference play. But the Cowboys, 17-5 overall, are 6-5 in WAC games. The No. 8-ranked Cougars are 19-1 and 8-0.

Jeff Chatman scored 22 points to lead the Cougars. Fennis Dembo had 25 for Wyoming. BYU’s Brian Taylor added 16 points.

Late in the game, after Dembo brought the Cowboys within two twice on three-pointers, Taylor responded with two three-point baskets of his own.

Utah 62, Colorado St. 46--Tommy Connor scored 17 points, including three three-point goals, and Mitch Smith passed the 1,000-point mark in career scoring as the Utes (14-7, 6-3) defeated the Rams (12-8, 3-5) in a WAC game at Salt Lake City. Smith, a 6-foot 8-inch junior, scored 12 points, giving him 1,010 in his career.

Michigan 80, Wisconsin 67--Gary Grant scored 28 points, and Glen Rice had 19 to lead the 12th-ranked Wolverines past the Badgers in a Big Ten game at Madison, Wis.

Grant had 10 of Michigan’s first 18 points in the second half as the Wolverines (19-4, 8-2) opened a 54-42 lead with 11:43 left. Rice made a three-pointer to put Michigan ahead 59-46.

Grant and Rice were the conference’s top scorers entering the game with averages of 22.9 and 22.1, respectively.

Trent Jackson scored 27 points for Wisconsin (9-11, 3-7).

Indiana 74, Northwestern 45--Dean Garrett scored 23 points as the 19th-ranked Hoosiers (14-6, 6-4) beat the Wildcats (6-13, 2-8) in a Big Ten game at Bloomington, Ind., to avenge a 66-64 loss at Northwestern earlier this season.

Brian Schwabe scored 16 points for Northwestern (6-13, 2-8).

Illinois 86, Minnesota 50--The Illini snapped a four-game losing streak by beating the Gophers in a Big Ten game at Champaign, Ill.

Nick Anderson scored 18 points for Illinois (15-8, 5-5).

Duke 98, Wake Forest 67--Reserve Phil Henderson scored a career-high 19 points to lead a balanced scoring attack as the No. 8 Blue Devils defeated the Demon Deacons in an ACC game at Durham, N.C.

The Blue Devils (17-3, 6-2) beat Wake Forest, 103-70, earlier in the season. They have won eight straight against the Demon Deacons (8-12, 2-6).

St. Mary’s 72, Gonzaga 63--Al Lewis scored 21 points, including four three-pointers, to lead the Gaels (14-6, 6-3) over the Bulldogs (11-11, 2-7) in the West Coast Athletic Conference game at Moraga, Calif.

St. Mary’s trailed by three points with 13:24 remaining but put together a 12-2 spurt to take a 52-45 lead with 8:53 left.

San Diego 61, Portland 41--Marty Munn scored 16 points to lead Toreros (10-12, 2-7) over the Pilots (6-16, 1-8) in the WCAC game at San Diego. The Pilots made 2 of 25 from the floor in the first half.
