Sea View League : Girls’ Basketball : Estancia Tops Saddleback, Clinches Title

Shawna Newbern scored a career-high 27 points to lead Estancia High School past Saddleback, 57-42, in a regular-season girls’ basketball finale Thursday at Estancia.

The victory clinched the Sea View League championship for Estancia (17-7 overall, 8-2 in league) and eliminated Saddleback (17-5, 6-4) from the playoffs.

Tustin (15-11, 7-3) and University (12-9, 7-3) finished tied for second, with University winning the coin toss for the league’s second playoff seed.

Newbern, a 5-9 guard, scored 14 points in the first half as Estancia improved on an 11-10 first-quarter lead to take a 30-16 lead at halftime.

Saddleback, which made just 2 of 12 free throws in the game, cut the deficit to 12 after three quarters. But the Eagles outscored the Roadrunners, 17-12, in the fourth quarter to seal the victory and Estancia’s first league title in five years.

Guards Patrice Lumpkin and Tracy Hoffman had 10 points each for Estancia. Monica Mayfield led Saddleback with 10 points.

In other Sea View League games:

University 45, Corona del Mar 30--Sandy Johnson scored 18 points to lead the host Trojans. University (12-9, 7-3) led, 19-13, at halftime, but outscored Corona del Mar, 16-8, in the third quarter. Barbara LaPoint scored 13 points for Corona del Mar (3-15, 0-10).

Tustin 65, Newport Harbor 53--Sherry Crawford scored 16 points and Teresa Perkins 14 for Tustin (15-11, 7-3), which qualified for the playoffs for the 15th consecutive season.

Jenny Stucker scored 20 for Newport Harbor (10-12, 2-8).
