College Basketball Roundup : Fourth-Ranked Oklahoma Runs Away From No. 14 Kansas State, 112-95

This time, there were no miracles for Kansas State.

Fourth-ranked Oklahoma, slowed to a walk by the Wildcats earlier this season, ran at will from the outset and scored a 112-95 victory over No. 14 Kansas State Saturday at Norman, Okla.

“Oklahoma entirely controlled the game from the start to the finish,” Kansas State Coach Lon Kruger said. “They set the tone with that press. Their intensity in the back court was more than we could handle.”

Kansas State (14-6 overall, 6-2 in the Big Eight) beat the Sooners, 69-62, the first time, but was in this game for only 10 minutes. Fred McCoy’s basket pulled the Wildcats within 18-17 with 10:56 left in the first half, but Mookie Blaylock scored 15 of Oklahoma’s next 26 points as the Sooners opened a 44-28 lead on their way to a 56-38 halftime advantage.

Oklahoma (22-2, 8-1) led by 30 points on three occasions in the second half before a futile rally got Kansas State within 106-93 with 2:15 left.

“I was concerned late in the game,” Oklahoma Coach Billy Tubbs said. “You’ll remember last year, we had a 13-point lead with three minutes to go and didn’t win the game.”

Mitch Richmond scored 41 points for Kansas State but couldn’t offset Oklahoma’s balance. Blaylock had 21 points, Ricky Grace added 20, Stacey King scored 19 and Harvey Grant and Dave Sieger each finished with 18 for the Sooners.

Georgetown 71, Syracuse 69--Mark Tillmon scored 19 points, and Charles Smith added 17 as the Hoyas rallied to knock off the No. 11 Orangemen in a Big East game at Landover, Md.

The Hoyas (16-6, 6-5) trailed by 13 points midway through the first half, but a 12-1 surge gave them a 36-34 halftime lead. Georgetown built a 64-56 lead, but Tillmon and Smith each made one free throw in the final 10 seconds to ensure the victory.

Stephen Thompson scored 20 points for Syracuse (18-6, 7-4).

Brigham Young 86, Colorado State 80--Michael Smith scored 20 points, and Jeff Chatman added 18 as the eighth-ranked Cougars survived a scare from the Rams in a Western Athletic Conference game at Provo, Utah.

Marty Haws put BYU (20-1, 9-0) ahead for good, 78-76, on a jumper from the top of the key with 2:12 left.

Pat Durham scored 24 points for Colorado State (12-9, 3-6).

Michigan 92, Indiana 72--Gary Grant scored 24 points, and Glen Rice added 22 to lead the 12th-ranked Wolverines past the No. 19 Hoosiers in a Big Ten game at Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Wolverines (20-4, 9-2) led, 40-38, at halftime and broke the game open with a 12-2 run that made it 65-48 with 11:30 left.

Freshman Jay Edwards scored 29 points for Indiana (14-7, 6-5), including six three-point shots, and Dean Garrett added 19 points.

Pitt 87, Villanova 75--Jerome Lane had 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds the fifth-ranked Panthers beat the Wildcats at Villanova, Pa., to keep their Big East lead.

Villanova (16-8, 8-4) was trailing, 69-54, with 7:36 left, but went on a 13-4 burst that cut the lead to 73-67 with 2:46 remaining. Pitt (17-3, 7-2) scored 6 of the next 8 points to wrap up the victory.

Charles Smith scored 17 points, and Sean Miller added 16 points for Pittsburgh. Mark Plansky had 27, and Doug West added 15 for Villanova.

Duke 90, Maryland 83--Danny Ferry scored 20 of his 33 points in the second half, and the eighth-ranked Blue Devils overcame the Terrapins at College Park, Md., to take sole possession of the Atlantic Coast Conference lead.

Maryland (13-8, 4-5) had a 30-26, but Duke (18-3, 7-2) scored 16 straight points and didn’t trail again. The Terrapins got within 87-83 with eight seconds left, but Ferry made two three throws to wrap up the victory.

Robert Brickey added 21 points, and Kevin Strickland had 19 for Duke. Derrick Lewis scored 21 points, and Rudy Archer had 17 for Maryland.

North Carolina State 101, Louisville 89--Vinny Del Negro scored 29 points, and Chucky Brown added 23 as the No. 13 Wolfpack made 67% of its shots while beating the Cardinals at Raleigh, N.C.

Charles Shackleford added 20 points for N.C. State (16-5), which scored the first 12 points and didn’t let Louisville (13-9) closer than 39-36 the rest of the way.

Pervis Ellison had 20 points and 7 rebounds for the Cardinals.

Kentucky 82, Alabama 68--Winston Bennett scored 25 points, and Rex Chapman added 17 as the 10th-ranked Wildcats beat the Crimson Tide in a Southeastern Conference game at Lexington, Ky.

After Kentucky (18-3, 10-3) built a 60-36 lead on Bennett’s basket with 15:13 left, Alabama (11-13, 3-9) rallied but could get no closer than 78-68 on Alvin Lee’s three-pointer with 1:13 remaining.

Michael Ansley scored 18 points for Alabama.

Bradley 98, Creighton 68--Hersey Hawkins scored 25 points, and Luke Jackson added 19 points and 17 rebounds as the No. 15 Braves trounced the Bluejays in a Missouri Valley Conference game at Peoria, Ill.

The Braves (16-4, 6-2) scored the first nine points and built the lead to 34-16 midway through the first half.

Rod Mason scored 16 points for Creighton (13-11, 5-5).

Vanderbilt 93, Mississippi 68--Will Perdue scored 17 points, and Barry Goheen added as the 17th-ranked Commodores overpowered the Rebels in an SEC game at Nashville, Tenn., for their 14th victory in 15 home games.

The Commodores (15-5, 9-4) built a 46-33 lead at halftime and broke the game open with a 15-4 run that made it 67-44 with 12:08 left.

Tim Jumper scored 18 points, and Roderick Barnes added 17 for Mississippi (9-12, 3-9).

Wyoming 69, Utah 60--Fennis Dembo scored 23 points as the No. 16 Cowboys got past the Utes in a WAC game at Salt Lake City.

Utah (14-8, 6-4) rallied from a 13-point deficit to get a 28-28 tie at halftime on Keith Chapman’s three-point shot at the buzzer, but Dembo opened the second half with a three-pointer and Wyoming (18-5, 7-5) never relinquished the lead.

Robyn Davis added 19 points for Wyoming, and Eric Leckner had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Mitch Smith had 18 points and 11 rebounds for Utah.

St. John’s 88, Providence 67--Shelton Jones collected 31 points and 11 rebounds as the Redmen snapped a three-game losing streak by routing the Friars in a Big East game at New York.

Jones scored 18 points as Redmen (15-6, 6-5) cruised to a 48-28 lead en route to breaking a three-game losing streak, their longest in four seasons.

Michael Porter added 23 points for St. John’s while Steve Wright scored 19 points for Providence (10-12, 4-7).

Kansas 82, Iowa State 72--Danny Manning scored 39 points, and the Jayhawks downed the Cyclones in a Big Eight game at Lawrence, Kan.

Manning scored four points and assisted on two three-point plays by Jeff Gueldner as Kansas (15-8, 4-4) scored 10 straight points for a 68-49 lead midway through the second half.

Jeff Grayer scored 30 points for Iowa State (16-9, 2-7), which lost its seventh straight game.

Florida 69, Mississippi State 52--Vernon Maxwell scored 22 points, and the Gators gave Coach Norm Sloan his 600th victory by defeating the Bulldogs in an SEC games at Gainesville, Fla.

Sloan, who has a 600-377 record, was denied the milestone with consecutive losses at Auburn and Georgia.

Dwayne Schintzius added 18 points for Florida (17-7, 8-4), while Carl Nichols scored 12 for Mississippi State (11-11, 3-9).

Evansville 65, DePaul 63--Dan Godfread tipped in a missed shot at the buzzer, and the Purple Aces surprised the Blue Demons at Rosemont, Ill.

DePaul (14-7) squandered a 52-39 lead and lost to Evansville for only the second time in 13 meetings.

Marty Simmons had 25 points to become the third player in Evansville history to score 1,000 points in his career. Rod Strickland scored 18 points for DePaul, and Stanley Brundy had 16.

Georgia Tech 78, Wake Forest 75--Tom Hammonds scored 30 points, and Craig Neal hit four straight free throws in the final 57 seconds to give the Yellow Jackets an ACC victory over the Deacons at Greensboro, N.C.

Tech (17-6, 4-4) led by 11 points at one stage in the first half before Wake Forest (8-13, 2-7) scored the first seven points after halftime to get back into the game.

Sam Ivy had 27 points and 16 rebounds for the Deacons, who stayed close but could never catch up.
