High School Soccer Playoffs : Ruiz, Hampton Key Simi Valley, 2-0

Simi Valley advanced to the second round of the Southern Section 4-A Division playoffs with a 2-0 win over Long Beach Wilson on Thursday night at Long Beach.

Simi Valley (18-6-2), ranked No. 8 in the division, received first-half goals from Willie Ruiz and Craig Hampton.

Ruiz scored on a header at the 11-minute mark and Hampton scored two minutes later on a corner kick.

Goalkeepers John Petritz and John Trudeau teamed for the shutout.

“It was a rough game,” Pioneer Coach Andy Silva said. “We’re lucky to be walking out of this one. We’re black and blue, but we’re all right.”

The Pioneers play Santa Monica at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Simi Valley.

Hart 2, Hawthorne 0--Rick Kempf and Chuck Foster each scored for Foothill League co-champion Hart in a 4-A match.

Tom Brundage assisted on both goals.

Goalkeeper Ted McPheeters easily recorded his seventh shutout as Hawthorne managed only three shots on goal.

Hart improved to 17-5-1.

Newbury Park 1, Ventura 0--Jason Swain scored on an assist from Billy Kranz as Newbury Park recorded a 4-A first-round win at home. Newbury Park finished second in the Marmonte League.

Oxnard 2, Burbank 1--Johnny Alevras scored Burbank’s lone goal as the Bulldogs were eliminated in a 4-A game at Oxnard.

GIRLS

Agoura 14, Atascadero 0--The Chargers began their quest for a third consecutive 2-A championship with a crushing win at Agoura.

Ten players scored for Agoura (21-0-3), including Wendy Bennett with three goals.

Christy Rapp and Heidi Walters each added two. Five of the remaining seven scorers were defenders.

Goaltender Trisha Arlege recorded her 17th shutout of the season.

The win was Agoura’s 49th consecutive without a loss, dating to Dec. 5, 1986.

Alemany 9, Antelope Valley 0--Kelly Cook, Rachel Gagliano and Jenny Hart each scored two goals for the Indians in a first-round 3-A playoff game at Alemany.

Lisa Gonzalez and Kate Dear combined on the shutout for Alemany (18-3-3), the Indians’ 13th of the season.

Alemany, ranked No. 4 in the division, won the Pacific League after losing in the 3-A final last year.

Royal 4, Arcadia 1--Four Highlanders scored as Royal recorded an easy first-round win in a 3-A playoff game at Royal.

Royal received goals from Tania Schraml, Mindy McKay, Staci Blough, and Shina Kacina.

The Highlanders improved to 15-4-2.

Royal plays the winner of the Mater Dei-Marino Valley game in the second round Tuesday.

Buena 3, Newbury Park 1--The Bulldogs scored twice in overtime to win a first-round 3-A playoff game at Buena.

Heather Rolland scored for Newbury Park.

Buena, the No. 8 team in the 3-A, improved to 18-4-1.
