Thon, a Free Agent, Signed by Padres
Infielder Dickie Thon, who has struggled to continue his baseball career since a 1984 beaning that affected his vision, was signed as a free agent Thursday by the San Diego Padres.
Thon, 29, signed a one-year contract with the Padres, club president Chub Feeney said. Terms were not disclosed.
A shortstop in the Houston Astros organization for the past seven years, Thon became a free agent when the Astros didn’t offer him a contract for this season.
He hit .212 in 32 games for Houston last season before the Astros placed him on the disqualified list July 3, citing Thon’s eye problems.
