Visiting Magnolia (12-11) shot extremely well from the outside, but lost anyway, 40-34, to an erratic Palos Verdes team in a first-round Division 3-A playoff game Saturday.

The Sea Kings improved to 21-7 and will travel to Esperanza of Anaheim (15-12), a 59-55 upset winner over third-seeded Mission Viejo, in the second round on Wednesday.

Palos Verdes got some good play from identical twins Heather and Heidi Burge, both 6-4, who ran up identical tallies of 13 points apiece.

But they almost weren’t enough to offset for the hot shooting of Magnolia’s Dawne Borum, a 5-11 senior forward who gunned from the outside for a total of 21 points. “If Magnolia could have made some inside buckets they would have beaten us,” Palos Verdes High Coach Wendell Yoshida said. “We had our own outside shots, but we just didn’t make ‘em.”

Senior center Rena Rossoll scored seven points for Magnolia. Palos Verdes also got seven points from 6-foot senior forward Anglesey Thomas and four from sophomore Mary Maloney.

Redondo 63, Canyon (Anaheim) 47--Guard Marlo Correa scored 20 points and center Janeen Guinn added 14 to lead the Sea Hawks (16-5) in a 4-A playoff opener at Redondo. The Pioneer League runners-up will play second-seeded Santa Barbara in the second round on Wednesday.
