High School Soccer Playoffs : Royal Girls Sneak Past Mater Dei, 1-0

Erin Anderson, called up from the Royal High junior varsity after the Highlanders’ leading scorer was injured last week, scored two minutes into the second half to lead the Highlanders to a 1-0 victory over Mater Dei on Tuesday in the second round of the girls’ Southern Section 3-A Division playoffs at Royal.

Anderson replaced Barbie Yribe, who twisted her ankle in the Highlanders’ 4-1 victory over Arcadia on Friday. Goalie Kristin Rizzo recorded her 11th shutout for Royal (16-4-2). Mater Dei, ranked No. 6 in the 3-A, finished its season 25-2.

Alemany 3, La Quinta 0--Kelly Cook scored two goals and Sondra Shatkin added another for Alemany in its 3-A second-round playoff victory at La Quinta.

Cook has 14 goals for the Indians (19-3-3) this season and Shatkin, an All-Southern Section halfback, has eight. Senior goalie Lisa Gonzalez recorded her 14th shutout.

Simi Valley 3, Bishop Montgomery 1--Kelly and Kerry Bertoldo scored goals two minutes apart in double-overtime to give Simi Valley (23-2-1) a second-round victory in a 3-A game at Bishop Montgomery.

Kelly scored on a crossing pass from Julie Gruber to break a 1-1 tie with five minutes left in the second overtime. Kerry scored an insurance goal two minutes later after a corner kick by her sister.

Michelle Light scored the Pioneers’ first goal 20 minutes into the first half.

BOYS

Newbury Park 1, Lakewood 0--Junior halfback Marc McComas scored on a head shot off a corner kick by G.J. Anderson. The goal came seven minutes into the second half in a 4-A second-round playoff game at Lakewood.

Newbury Park (17-5-1), has won seven consecutive games. Richard Bengston, the Panthers’ senior goalie, recorded his second shutout in a row and seventh of the season.

Simi Valley 2, Santa Monica 1--The Pioneers knocked off fourth-ranked Santa Monica on penalty kicks in a 4-A second-round playoff game at Simi Valley.

The score was tied, 1-1, after regulation. Simi Valley converted its first four penalty kicks. Santa Monica failed on its first and fourth as goalie John Petritz of Simi Valley making the saves.

Dave Luzuriaga scored the only goal in regulation for the Pioneers (19-6-2) with only six minutes left.

Palos Verdes 1, Hart 0--Hart (17-6-1) lost the 4-A second-round playoff game when Palos Verdes scored the only goal of the game after a direct free kick with four minutes to play.
