THE PREPS : Girls’ 4-A Soccer : Kennedy Has 4 Goals for Mission Viejo, 5-0

Kerri Kennedy scored four goals, three in the first period, to lead Mission Viejo High School to a 5-0 victory over Corona del Mar in a Southern Section 4-A quarterfinal girls’ soccer match Wednesday at Mission Viejo.

The Diablos, seeking their third straight 4-A championship, will travel to Torrance on Tuesday for a semifinal match.

Mission Viejo, which defeated Corona del Mar, 3-1, earlier this season, scored its first goal with two minutes played in the game when Rae Hubocan scored a breakaway goal on a pass from Stacey Hopper.

Kennedy gave the Diablos (24-0-2) a 2-0 lead seven minutes into the half when she took a pass from Tammy Van Opdorp and scored on a close-in shot.

Kennedy, who scored 12 goals during the regular season, got her second of the game with 27 minutes played in the first half on a breakaway after receiving a pass from Hopper.

Kennedy’s third goal--and Mission Viejo’s fourth of the half--was scored three minutes after her second on another breakaway, this time after she took a pass from Sherri Bertell.

Kennedy closed out the scoring with nine minutes played in the second half when her shot from inside the Sea King penalty area went off Corona del Mar goalie Kim Kolstad’s hands into the net. Corona del Mar finishes 12-6-5.

In other 4-A matches:

Torrance 1, El Toro 0--El Toro outshot Torrance, 12-5, but Deanne Call scored from 20 yards with 10 minutes remaining in the game to win at El Toro.

The Chargers scored a goal early in the game, but it was called back after the referees decided that a whistle had been blown for a foul just before the goal.

Goalie Paige Lauby had three saves for the Chargers.
