Fullerton Loses at Fresno St., Has One More Shot on Road

Cal State Fullerton, in one of its final two chances to win a game on the road this season, put on one of its worst performances and lost to Fresno State, 57-54, in front of 10,159 Thursday night in Selland Arena.

Fresno State had a 10-point lead with 1:22 remaining, but, although it dwindled, Fullerton never threatened to win.

The Titans are down to one remaining chance to win a road game. Saturday, Fullerton plays at Pacific, the only Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. team that has yet to win a conference game.

“We played about as bad as we can play,” said George McQuarn, Fullerton coach. “It’s very, very difficult to think of anything good to say about the way we played. We could not play any worse.”

Fullerton (8-16, 4-11) had beaten Fresno State in an overtime game in the teams’ first meeting this season. With the Bulldogs missing two starters because of injuries, this appeared to be a good opportunity for the Titans.

But Richard Morton and Henry Turner, the Titans’ leading scorers, both had bad games.

Morton scored just 8 points, making 3 of 14 shots, and scored fewer than 10 points for only the second time in 40 games.

Turner, who was averaging 20.6 points a game at home but only 12.8 on the road, scored 14 points.

Leo Walker, one of two men starting in place of injured players for Fresno State, scored a career-high 19 points, including 3 of 3 three-pointers.

Fresno State improved to 9-15 overall, 6-9 in the PCAA.
