Golf Roundup : Little-Known Joan Delk Is LPGA Leader

Joan Delk battled stiff winds on Oahu’s north shore Friday to shoot a three-under-par 69 for a one-stroke lead after two rounds of the $300,000 Ladies Professional Golf Assn. Hawaiian Open at Honolulu.

Delk, winless in two years on the LPGA Tour, matched the best round of her career despite winds gusting to 25 m.p.h. on the 6,220-yard Turtle Bay Resort course.

Delk made four birdies against one bogey for a 140 total, four under par, going into today’s final round.

Hall of Fame member JoAnne Carner and 1987 LPGA Player of the Year Ayako Okamoto were one stroke back. Carner shot a 71, and Okamoto finished with a 72. Anne-Marie Palli shot a 71 for a 142 total and sole possession of fourth place.

Five players, including Thursday’s leader Jan Stephenson, were three strokes back at 143. The others were Sally Quinlan, Kathy Postlewait, Beth Daniel and Cathy Gerring.

Dave Hill shot a four-under-par 68 to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Aetna Challenge Senior tournament at Naples, Fla.

Bruce Devlin, Bob Charles and Don Massengale are tied for second at 69. Gary Player is two shots off the lead, and five players are at one-under 71.

Greg Norman followed his record opening round of 62 with a two-under-par 70 and holds a three-stroke lead after two rounds of a $175,000 tournament at Canberra, Australia.

Norman, a 33-year-old Australian, was at 12-under-par 132 after 36 holes. Australian Peter Senior was second at 135. Two shots further back were West Germany’s Bernhard Langer, and Mike Colandro and David Tentis.
