A Third Redskin Coach, Jerry Rhome, Apparently Being Considered by Davis

Jerry Rhome has become the third member of the Washington Redskins’ Super Bowl coaching staff to be interviewed for the Raiders’ head coaching job, a source told The Times Friday.

Rhome, who coached the quarterbacks, already has been hired as the new offensive coordinator of the San Diego Chargers but isn’t due to start that assignment until late March.

Not available for comment Friday, Rhome would be the third Redskin assistant interviewed by Raider owner Al Davis as a possible replacement for Tom Flores, who announced his retirement Jan. 20. Two other offensive assistants, Dan Henning and Joe Bugel, have dropped out of the running.

Rhome, 46, broke 17 National Collegiate Athletic Assn. passing records at the University of Tulsa. He had been with the Redskins for five seasons, after seven years as offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks.
