Community College Roundup : Saddleback Second in Golf

Individual medalist John Wardrup shot a two-under-par 105 for 27 holes for Saddleback College, which finished second in the San Diego Academy golf tournament Friday at at Whispering Palms Country Club in San Diego.

San Diego Academy won with a team score of 553. Saddleback had 560, Long Beach was third with 654, and Palomar was fourth with 578.

Wardrup, a sophomore, has won five of the six tournaments Saddleback has played this season. Ray Fawcett of Saddleback shot 111 to finish in sixth, and Kevin Goto of Saddleback shot 113 to finish 14th.

Cypress was 10th with 596, and Rancho Santiago was 11th with 602.

In the Riverside baseball tournament:

Rancho Santiago 10, Long Beach 4--Willie Navarrette (4-0) pitched pitched a nine-hitter for Rancho Santiago in the second-round game. Rancho Santiago scored four runs in the second and eighth innings. Catcher Joey Townsend had two hits and four RBIs for Rancho Santiago (10-0), the top-ranked team in the state.

Townsend added a two-run single in the sixth. Wade Clester was had two hits and a run for Rancho Santiago, which had 16 hits.

In the Cypress softball tournament:

Cypress 6, LA Harbor 1--Sue Boxley went 2 for 2 with home run and three RBIs to lead Cypress. Colleen Moore (3-1) pitched five innings for the victory. Cypress defeated Long Beach, 12-1, in an earlier game.
