Local News in Brief : Anaheim : City Council Approves Canyon Police Station

Share

The City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a plan to build the city’s first police substation in a canyon area of east Anaheim, where residential development is expected to produce a population boom in five to 10 years.

Mel Vyborney, the Police Department’s planning, research and training officer, said police officials requested the new facility in anticipation of expanding needs in the city’s northeastern region.

Three developments approved in recent months in the area will add more than 5,000 residences. City officials estimate that the population will grow by 15,000 within 10 years, Vyborney said.

The station, which is not expected to be built for several years, will be on 1 acre just south of Monte Vista Road, between Dream Street and Weir Canyon Road.

Vyborney said plans call for the facility to have about 60 police officers and support staff members providing 24-hour service.

No price tag has been estimated for the facility. Costs will be borne by developers’ fees, city officials said.

Police services are now provided in the area from the department’s headquarters at South Harbor Boulevard.
