Girls’ Athletes of the Week

Tyeast Brown concedes that she was an unknown on the Point Loma High School girls’ basketball team last season. Brown and most of the Pointers played in the shadow of All-American Terri Mann, who led Point Loma to four consecutive state titles.

She is not an unknown anymore.

Brown scored 23 points, blocked 3 shots and had 17 rebounds to lead top-ranked Point Loma over Monte Vista and into the semifinals of the section Division I tournament.

Brown, a 5-foot 11-inch center, had 13 of Point Loma’s 28 offensive rebounds and controlled the inside game against Monte Vista. The victory was Point Loma’s 131st in a row at home, a streak that probably will stretch into another season because any remaining San Diego Section games will be at neutral sites. The only chance Point Loma would have of playing at home again would be a first-round game in the Southern California championships.
