Bobby Wadkins shot his second five-under-par 67 Friday for a two-stroke lead halfway through the $1-million Doral Open golf tournament at Miami.

Wadkins, a non-winner in 14 seasons on the PGA Tour, completed two trips over the wind-blown Blue Monster course at the Doral Country Club in 134.

Chip Beck, who scored his first career victory last week in the Los Angeles Open, shot his second bogey-free 68 and was at 136.

“I think there’s a lot of carry-over from last week,” Beck said. “The putter still feels good in my hand, and that always helps.”

Jack Nicklaus, a part-time tour player since scoring his sixth Masters victory in 1986, was another shot back at 137 after a 69.

“Probably the best I’ve played since (the) Olympic (Club) last year (in the U.S. Open),” Nicklaus said.

Former champion Tom Kite, Gil Morgan and Robert Wrenn were next at 138. Wrenn had a 68, Morgan a 69 and Kite a 70.

The group at 139 included PGA champion Larry Nelson, Ben Crenshaw and two-time Doral champion Mark McCumber, who moved up with a 68. Crenshaw shot a 69, and Nelson had a 71.

Defending champion Lanny Wadkins, Bobby’s older brother, had a 71 and was at 145.

Bobby, who has played much of his career in Lanny’s shadow, got off to a birdie-birdie start.

“I felt very comfortable out there,” he said.

Beth Daniel shot a six-under-par 66 to take a one-stroke lead in the second round of the $300,000 Women’s Kemper Open at Princeville, Hawaii.

Daniel, four strokes back when the day started, finished 36 holes on the 6,210-yard Mirage Princeville Ocean and Lakes nines on the North shore of Kauai in 138.

Marci Bozarth, a co-leader with Hollis Stacy going into the second round, shot a 71 and was at 139. Stacy shot a 75 and was at 143, five strokes back.

Connie Chillemi, who had a 71, was third at 140.

Australian Greg Norman shot a five-under-par 67 and took a three-shot lead in the second round of the $200,000 Tournament Players’ Championship at the Riverside Oaks course in Sydney, Australia.

Norman, seeking his second victory in two weeks, said his form was “flaky” through the 10th hole. He had a 36-hole score of 134.

Tied for second at 137 were Sweden’s Anders Forsbrand (68) and Leif Hederstrom (70) and Australia’s Brett Ogle (67).
