College Highlights : Northridge Sweeps Riverside in Softball

Cal State Northridge opened defense of its California Collegiate Athletic Assn. softball title with a doubleheader sweep of UC Riverside at Lady Matador Field on Saturday.

Sparked by Lisa Martin’s perfect game in the opener, Northridge defeated Riverside, 7-0, and 9-3.

Martin struck out five to even her record at 1-1, and teammates Lisa Hall and Leslie Plank powered the Northridge offense. Hall was 2 for 3 with a run batted in and Plank was 1 for 1 with 2 RBIs.

In the second game, Martin, Beth Onestinghel and Pam Smith each had two hits. Smith had 3 RBIs and Onestinghel and Kim Bernstein each had 2.

The Lady Matadors (5-8 overall, 2-0 in conference play), the defending NCAA Division II champions, are shooting for their seventh consecutive conference crown.

Christ College 1-0, The Master’s 0-4--Beth Downey pitched a five-hit shutout to give the Mustangs a split in their NAIA District III doubleheader at Master’s.

Cathy Hotchkiss scored two runs for Master’s (4-6, 2-2) after doubling to lead off both the first and third innings. Michelle Vail had an RBI double in the first inning and came around to score.

Napa Valley 4, Moorpark 3--Pam Pridy scored the tying run and drove in the winning run in the sixth inning to eliminate Moorpark from the Bakersfield tournament.

Moorpark (8-6-1) came back from a two-run deficit and led, 3-2, in the third inning before losing.

Malia Ouzts singled and later scored the first of three Raiders runs in the third inning. Ouzts went 3 for 4 and stole 2 bases.

Pridy’s two-out single down the right-field line scored Lori Cook for the winning run in the fifth inning. Pridy scored the tying run on Ricci Hayes’ single in the fourth inning.

BASEBALL

CS Sacramento 9-7, CS Northridge 5-6--Chae Chong went 6 for 9, hit 2 home runs and drove in 6 runs, but could not prevent Northridge from being swept in a nonconference doubleheader at Cal State Sacramento.

In the first game, Northridge (6-14) scored four runs in the eighth inning to take a 5-3 lead. Chong hit a three-run shot and Lenn Gilmore followed with a solo home run.

But the Matador pitchers could not protect the lead as Cal State Sacramento scored six runs in the bottom half of the inning.

In the second game, Cal State Sacramento scored six runs in the third inning, then held off a late Northridge rally.

Cal Lutheran 14-4, Point Loma 5-2--The Kingsmen used a potent offense in the first game and strong pitching in the second to sweep the Golden State Athletic Conference opener at Point Loma.

Jon Egertson’s three-run double and Chris Portis’ two-run single keyed a six-run third inning in the opener as Cal Lutheran (8-6, 2-0) pounded out 14 hits off 4 Point Loma pitchers.

Every Kingsmen starter had a hit, including Kevin Wynn (2 for 4), Portis (2 for 3, 2 RBIs), Dan Weiss (a home run and 3 RBIs) and Dave Leonhadt (1 for 3, 3 RBIs).

Greg Minick (1-2) pitched a three-hitter for his first victory of the season in the second game. Minick, a junior right-hander, struck out 9 and walked 8.

Leonhadt drove in Tom Bonds with a two-out single in the seventh to break a 2-2 tie.

Canyons 28, Moorpark 3--The Cougars exploded for 30 hits off 7 Moorpark pitchers in the Western State Conference opener at Canyons.

Five Canyons players, Billy Picketts (3 for 4), Ross Linstrom (3 for 3 with 3 RBIs), Ray Palagyi (3 for 4 with 3 RBIs), Chris Joy (3 for 4 with 3 RBIs), and Jeff Flesher (3 for 3), each had 3 hits each and 6 Canyons players hit a home run.

Although Tim Nedin struggled on the mound, he picked up his third victory of the year against no defeats. Nedin gave up 7 hits, walked 5 and struck out 5 in 6 innings.

Canyons is 6-3 overall.

Bakersfield 7, Pierce 5--Reliever Paul Bedigian surrendered two runs in the eighth inning as Pierce dropped its Western State Conference opener at Bakersfield.

MEN’S TRACK

CS Northridge 87, CS Bakersfield 64, Cal Poly Pomona 35, UC Riverside 16--Tyrone Jeffries of Northridge, an established hurdler, improved his sprinting credentials with victories in the 100 and 200 meters in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. quadrangular meet at Cal State Bakersfield.

WOMEN’S TRACK

CS Northridge 80, Cal Poly Pomona 53, CS Bakersfield 44, UC Riverside 4--The Lady Matadors, led by Darcy Arreola, Phoebe Smith and Teresa Poy, remained undefeated with a convincing victory in the CCAA quadrangular meet at Cal State Bakersfield.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cal State Northridge d. UC San Diego, 15-0, 13-15, 15-2, 15-6--Andrew Greskovics hammered a match-high 19 kills and teammate Jeff Campbell added 13 as Northridge recorded a nonconference win at Northridge.

Tom Ribarich had 43 assists for Northridge (9-11). Sean Hudson led San Diego with 13 kills.
