DeVicenzo Shoots a Final 69 to Win Super Seniors Title by Two Strokes

Foreign golfers seem to be taking control of the regular PGA Tour and the LPGA Tour, and are doing well on the PGA Seniors Tour. So why shouldn’t they do the same in Super Seniors competition?

Roberto DeVicenzo, the likable Argentine, best known for losing the Masters because he signed the wrong scorecard, won the $7,100 first prize in the event for the 60-and-over pros at Vintage Country Club Saturday.

DeVicenzo, who will be 65 next month, shot his second consecutive three-under-par 69 to finish at 213, beating Charlie Sifford, who shot a 74, by two strokes.

DeVicenzo, playing in his first tournament this year, joked that he had improved his English and his addition.

Although he fell short in his bid to win, Sifford, who will be 65 in June, took over the Super Seniors money lead with $22,465 for four tournaments.

Bob Toski, who said he didn’t care about winning the Super Seniors, just the regular senior event, didn’t have to worry. Toski, the co-leader after two rounds with Sifford, soared to a 78 to finish third. He doesn’t figure to earn much in the regular senior tournament, which concludes today.
