THE PREPS : Prep Baseball : Servite Advances in Loara Tournament With 8-5 Win

Servite High School scored four runs in the fifth inning and went on to beat host La Quinta, 8-5, Monday in the second round of the Loara baseball tournament.

Brian Criss, who was 2 for 3, had a two-out, two-run double in the fifth for the Friars (2-0). Servite built a 7-0 lead over La Quinta (1-1).

Craig Barkley (1-0) threw a one-hitter through five innings and had six strikeouts, and Jim Berry was 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs.

In other Loara tournament second-round games:

El Dorado 4, Irvine 3 (8 innings)--Matt Luke doubled to open the eighth and two outs later David Moore singled him in for the winning run for El Dorado (2-0). Irvine (1-1) got a chance to come back when Luke, the winning pitcher, walked two to lead off the inning. But Brad Snoddy lined into a double play.

Ocean View 2, Kennedy 1 (8 innings)--Gary Christopherson was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning for host Ocean View (2-2) and was replaced by pinch-runner Randy Kimoto, who scored on Mark Brenner’s base hit. Winning pitcher Derek Ogle gave up 3 hits and struck out 9.

Villa Park 5, San Clemente 4--Chris Johnson drove in the winning run for Villa Park (2-0) in the sixth inning, scoring Chris Bell at Boysen Park.

El Toro 2, Marina 1 (8 innings)--Chris McCarthy walked in the top of the eighth inning, stole second and scored the winning run for El Toro (2-2) on Sean Drinkwater’s base hit. Marina is 1-1.

Huntington Beach 11, Anaheim 1--Huntington Beach improved its record to 4-0. Anaheim is 1-1.

Dana Hills 8, Los Amigos 1--Todd Rochford led host Dana Hills, going 3 for 3 with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs. Mike Kislig (1-0) went four innings for Dana Hills (1-1), giving up three hits.

Fountain Valley 12, Magnolia 5--Fountain Valley (1-1) scored five runs in the sixth inning at Magnolia (0-2). Fountain Valley’s Brad Futak was 2 for 5 with 3 RBIs and John Dalpoggetto was 3 for 5 with a bases-empty home run. Chris Cantor went the distance, giving up eight hits.

Santiago 6, Cypress 4--Sean McCorry went 6 innings, giving up 6 hits and striking out 4 for the victory. Reliever Mike Orta came in with the tying runs on base and got the save. Jason Marquez was 3 for 3 with a double and 2 RBIs for host Santiago (1-1). Steve Sheets had a double, a home run and three RBIs for Cypress (0-2).

Loara 11, Pacifica 9--Craig Clayton’s two-run home run in the first inning started the scoring for visiting Loara (1-1) at Glover Stadium.

Laguna Hills 6, North (Riverside) 0--Rob Milo had a two-out, three-run home run as Laguna Hills scored five runs in the fifth inning. Beau Hossler (1-0) combined with starter Mike Smedes (one hit and five strikeouts in four innings) for the shutout.

University 4, Downey 2--Mark Sutter stole home in the sixth inning, for what proved to be the winning run for host University (1-1). Winning pitcher Garth Viar gave up 3 hits and an earned run and struck out 6 in 7 innings.

In the first round of the Newport Elks tournament:

Mater Dei 9, Santa Ana Valley 3--Mike Basse was 2 for 4 with a home run and 2 RBIs for Mater Dei (3-0). Adolpho Reyes had a two-run homer for Santa Ana Valley (0-1).

El Modena 7, Orange 1--Marcus Esposito pitched a seven-hitter at Hart Park. El Modena (1-2) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a home run by Joe Santos.

Foothill 4, Tustin 1--Tommy Adams (1-0) threw a three-hitter, striking out five, for host Foothill (1-0). Corey Parker gave Foothill an early lead, singling home two runs in the first. Ryan Relph singled in Tustin’s only run in the fifth inning.

Estancia 4, Costa Mesa 1--Host Estancia (3-0) scored all its runs in the first inning. Gabe Javage (2-0) went 4 innings without giving up a hit.

Santa Ana 15, Woodbridge 2--Host Santa Ana (1-0) scored eight runs in the first inning. Reuben Gomez drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double. Winning pitcher George Carachure gave up four hits in three innings.
