Girls’ Athlete of the Week : BASKETBALL
The Mt. Carmel High School girls’ basketball team may have been seeded fourth in the San Diego Section Division I playoffs, but it had the inside track.
Lynda Jones played a solid inside game, helping Mt. Carmel to victories over top-seeded Point Loma, the four-time defending state and section champion, in the semifinals and second-seeded Santana in the final at the Sports Arena.
Jones scored 21 points as Mt. Carmel upset Point Loma, 55-38. She scored 23 points and had 11 rebounds in the 57-47 victory over Santana for the championship.
SOCCER
Senior Stephanie Case scored both goals for Torrey Pines as the Falcons upended Bonita Vista, 2-1, in the San Diego Section 3-A girls’ soccer championship match Friday.
Case, who also plays softball, scored the Falcons’ first goal right-footed when she dribbled around three defenders and smashed a shot past the Bonita Vista goalkeeper from 15 yards out.
She scored with her left foot on a 30-foot shot 15 minutes into the second half.
