Santa Barbara’s Shaw Is PCAA Player of Year

Senior guard Brian Shaw of UC Santa Barbara was selected Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. player of the year by a vote of the men’s basketball coaches, the PCAA announced Wednesday.

Shaw was the first player in the history of the PCAA to lead the conference in assists (6.3) and rebounds (9.1). He averaged 12.8 points a game.

Jerry Tarkanian of Nevada Las Vegas was coach of the year, and Stacey Augmon of Las Vegas was freshman of the year.

Shaw is joined on the first team by center Wayne Engelstad of UC Irvine, guard Ricky Berry of San Jose State, forward Jarvis Basnight of Las Vegas, guard Kevin Nixon of Utah State and guard Morlon Wiley of Long Beach.

Forward Richard Morton of Fullerton, forward Andre Purry of Long Beach, forward Jervis Cole of Fresno State, forward Dan Conway of Utah State and forward Gerald Paddio of Las Vegas made the second team.
