High School Spring Sports : After 73 Wins, El Camino Real Drops 2 in Row

The last time El Camino Real’s softball team played against a Marmonte League opponent, Royal counted it as a win while El Camino Real called it a scrimmage. El Camino Real could not do that Thursday when the Conquistadores traveled to Newbury Park and lost, 7-1, in their first official game.

El Camino has now lost two consecutive games, including last season’s City Section 4-A championship, on the heels of a school-record 73-game winning streak.

Lea Lopez, a sophomore in her first varsity start for Newbury Park, gave up 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 9. El Camino Real’s only run was unearned.

Beth Silverman took the loss for El Camino Real, which committed 6 errors.

In other softball games:

Chatsworth 36, Canoga Park 1--Sophomore Mara Phillips went 6 for 6 with 2 triples, 1 double and 5 runs batted in.

Agoura 6, Westlake 3--Agoura freshman Melissa Thatcher won her third game without a loss. She allowed 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 2.

Calabasas 6, Moorpark 0--Julie Astrachan struck out 17 batters to lead Calabasas.

Burroughs 16, Hoover 1--Karin Knoop was 3 for 3 with a double, a triple, and 4 RBIs for Burroughs.

Sylmar 24, Verdugo Hills 3--Chris Parks was 3 for 4 with 3 doubles, 7 RBIs and 4 runs scored, and Cindy Campbell was 4 for 5 with 2 RBIs and 4 runs scored for Sylmar.

BOYS’ TRACK

Crespi 108, Bosco Tech 17--Crespi’s Ron Redell won the 100 meters in 11.1, the 220 yards in 23.2 seconds and 440 in 52.0. He also was a member of the Celts’ 440 relay team that won in 46.1 seconds.

Agoura 98, La Canada 25--Agoura’s Bryan Dameworth doubled in the 800 (2:02.8) and 3,200 meters (9:59.8), Jeff Ingalls won the 100 (a school record 11.3) and 400 (51.9) and John Sommers was victorious in the pole vault (12-0) and triple jump (40-5).

Burroughs 81, Canyon 42--Burroughs’ Doug Dragomer won the 100 meters in 10.6 and teammate Bruce Luizzi won the 200 in 21.5. It is likely that the marks were wind-aided, but there was no wind gauge. Sasha Vujic ran 9:55.0 in the two-mile event for Burroughs.

GIRLS’ TRACK

La Canada 61, Agoura 57--Jenny Whelchel, Deena Drossin and Julie Tingle all set school records for Agoura. Whelchel, the defending state champion in the shotput, won her specialty with a personal best of 44-5 1/2. She set her previous best of 43-9 1/2 in winning the state title last year. Drossin won the 800 (2:27.2), 1,600 (5:29.4) and 3,200 meters (11:32.8), setting a school record in the latter event. Tingle placed second in the 200 meters at 26.6.

Canyon 64 1/2, Burroughs 49 1/2--Cindy Byrne won the 100- and 300-meter low hurdles for Canyon in the nonleague meet at Canyon. Byrne ran 16.2 in the 100 hurdles and 49.9 in the 300 hurdles.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Royal d. Saugus, 15-1, 15-9, 15-11--Junior outside hitter Craig Parker had 8 kills and Robert Fungaroli added 6 for Royal (3-0).

Rio Mesa d. Hart, 15-11, 11-15, 15-8, 15-3--Despite 8 kills by Bruce Gray and 14 blocks from Cameron Smyth, Hart lost the nonleague game.

Campbell Hall d. Southwestern, 9-15, 15-8, 15-8, 15-2--Tim Sutton had 13 kills and 4 aces and sophomore Don White added 11 kills for Campbell Hall. Junior setter Ty Leatherman had 43 assists and 1 ace for Campbell Hall (3-1).

Granada Hills d. San Pedro, 15-7, 15-8, 15-5--Senior outside hitter Ben Itkin led the Highlanders with a team-high 11 kills.

Sylmar d. Cleveland, 9-15, 11-15, 17-15, 15-9, 15-4--Chris Laune had 11 kills and 6 service aces to lead Sylmar.

Chaminade d. Murphy, 15-12, 15-6, 7-15, 15-12--Chris Bruckner led Chaminade (2-2) with 12 kills and Steve Walker added 8.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Westlake 11, Calabasas 7--The Warriors’ No. 1 doubles team of Todd Robinson and Mike Studebaker defeated all three Calabasas teams they faced as Westlake won the nonleague match at Calabasas.
