College Spring Sports : CSUN’s Jeffries Keeps Track Goals in Sight
Tyrone Jeffries of Cal State Northridge does not set goals based on times. When he gets set in the starting blocks, Jeffries concentrates on one thing--winning.
“I just want to win every time I step on the track,” Jeffries said. “If I concentrate on winning, I know the times will come.”
Jeffries’ philosophy paid big dividends in Saturday’s quadrangular track meet at UCLA against the Bruins, Azusa Pacific and Long Beach State.
The sophomore from Muir High won the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, placed second in the 110-meter high hurdles, and ran legs on the Matadors’ 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams, which placed third and fourth.
UCLA, the defending NCAA champion, won the men’s meet with 108 points, followed by Azusa Pacific (47), CSUN (27) and Long Beach State (11).
The Bruins also won the women’s meet, scoring 115 points. Northridge placed second.
Jeffries recorded personal bests of 14.22 seconds in the high hurdles and 51.98 in the intermediates. He qualified for May’s NCAA Division II championships in the highs and moved into a tie for second on the all-time CSUN list.
