Paul Azinger, 1987’s player of the year, shot a five-under-par 66 for a share of the lead Thursday in the first round of the $750,000 Bay Hill golf tournament at Orlando, Fla.

Andy Magee gained a tie at the top when he rolled in a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club.

It was two strokes back to Sandy Lyle of Scotland, defending champion Payne Stewart, Denis Watson of South Africa, Tom Purtzer, Bobby Wadkins, Don Pooley, Dan Forsman, Curtis Strange and Joey Sindelar, winner of last week’s Honda tournament.

Ian Woosnam of Wales, who collected eight international titles and about $1.8 million in worldwide earnings last year, opened his four-tournament American swing with a 70.

Tom Watson hit two balls into the water on the sixth hole, took a triple-bogey 8 and went on to a 74. Australian Greg Norman shot a 73, and Palmer, the 58-year-old tournament host, had a 72.

Laura Davies of Britain fired a course-record, nine-under-par 63 to take a four-stroke lead in the frost-delayed opening round of the $300,000 LPGA Tucson Open.

The U.S. Open champion made three birdies and an eagle over the last four holes to break the record of 64 held by Penny Pulz. Earlier, Davies, 24, birdied the third, fifth and eighth holes for a three-under-par 32 on the front nine of the 6,243-yard Randolph North course.

The start was delayed an hour by frost on the greens.

Sally Little missed several birdie chances but still posted a 67. Patty Sheehan had a 68, while Robin Walton and Deb Richard each shot a 69.
