Prep Baseball Roundup : Pitcher Has Perfect Debut for Tourney
Henry Schelb found the perfect way to start the Redondo/Palos Verdes Baseball Tournament on Saturday night.
The Redondo right-hander retired all 21 batters he faced, pitching the Sea Hawks to a 17-0 victory over visiting Dorsey. Schelb struck out 12 and allowed just two balls to leave the infield.
“I just felt good out there the whole game,” said Schelb, whose arm was tired from sleeping on it the night before. “I knew around the fourth inning I had a perfect game going, but I just tried to keep it out of my mind.”
Schelb kept Dorsey batters on their heels with a mixture of fastballs and change-ups. He seemed to get stronger as the game wore on, striking out five of the last six batters.
“My arm was a little tired at first,” he said. “But it started feeling really good at the end.”
Schelb was staked to a big lead as Redondo (8-0) scored four runs in each of the first two innings. Scott Davison, the Sea Hawks’ No. 1 pitcher, played shortstop and drove in seven runs with a grand slam and a bases-loaded single.
Schelb said working with a big lead helped his confidence.
“It gives you some comfort because I hung a couple of curve balls that I normally wouldn’t have thrown,” he said.
Redondo collected 12 hits and took advantage of 13 Dorsey walks. The Dons fell to 0-4.
