College Spring Sports : CSUN Women Sweep Loyola Marymount

Led by a 20-hit attack in the first game and solid pitching in the second, the Cal State Northridge softball team swept a nonconference doubleheader from Loyola Marymount on Saturday at Northridge.

The Lady Matadors won the first game, 17-5, and the second, 6-2.

In the first game, nine players batted in a six-run fifth inning for Northridge (15-9). April Russell, Andi Goodell, Michelle Blaha and Dolly Haramillo all had run-scoring singles.

Lisa Erickson was 3 for 3, Lisa Martin was 2 for 3 and Lisa Hall was 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs.

Delanee Anderson (4-4) struck out 3, walked 1 and yielded 10 hits for a complete-game victory.

In the second game, Tracey Fox pitched a three-hitter and had 10 strikeouts to improve her record to 2-2. Loyola Marymount scored two unearned runs in the fourth inning after a throwing error by right fielder Lisa Erickson.

BASEBALL

Oxnard 4-5, Pierce 2-1--Paul Plyler accounted for all of the Brahma runs with a two-run homer in the first game and a solo shot in the second as Pierce lost a Western State Conference doubleheader at Oxnard. Plyler has three home runs this season.

Oxnard pitcher Bill Evans won both games, the first in relief. Former Simi Valley High catcher Tim Laker doubled in the second game for Oxnard, and former Rio Mesa player Mike Runge was 2 for 3.

Pierce is 9-7, 3-5 in conference play.

Cal Lutheran 14-5, Point Loma Nazarene 5-9--The Kingsmen hit two home runs in the first game and split an NAIA District III doubleheader at Cal Lutheran.

Tom Bonds and Kevin Wynn each hit a three-run homer to pace a 13-hit attack by Cal Lutheran (10-11, 5-4 in conference play). Wynn had three hits and three runs scored along with his fifth homer. David Leonhardt had two hits and two RBIs, Anthony Espitia had three hits and Henry Campos had three RBIs.

Leonhardt and Campos also had two hits each in the second game.

Allan Hancock 11-2, Moorpark 6-4--Moorpark freshman Paul Perce pitched a complete-game victory in the second game of the Western State Conference doubleheader at Moorpark. With the Raiders’ earned-run average hovering around 12.00 in their conference games, Perce’s performance, in his first start and first decision, was all the more welcome.

“You can imagine what a pleasure it was to watch him pitch,” Moorpark Coach Ron Stillwell said.

Perce, a product of Rio Mesa High, boosted Moorpark’s record to 6-9, 2-6 in conference play. Kevin Thomas chipped in with a two-run double in the fourth to end the Raiders’ five-game losing streak.

In the first game, Moorpark’s Ed Campaniello was 3 for 3, Greg Struhl was 2 for 2 and Lloyd Wood was 2 for 4, but three Raider pitchers walked 12 batters.

College of the Desert 6, L.A. Valley 1--Peter Busarac had three hits, including a three-run home run in the fifth, to lead Desert in a Southern California Athletic Conference game at Valley.

Danny Miner had three of Valley’s five hits and scored the Monarchs’ only run when Chris Gonzales singled him home in the eighth. Tim DeGrasse, a freshman from Notre Dame High, pitched seven innings for the loss, his fourth in five decisions.

Chaffey 11, Mission 8--Mission stranded 14 baserunners, including two in the ninth inning, and lost a Southern California Athletic Conference game at Chaffey.

Earl Meyers was 3 for 5, including a two-run home run, and added three RBIs for Mission (3-12-1, 2-4). Chaffey is 6-0 in conference play.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Yale 9, CS Northridge 0--Yale swept six singles matches and three doubles matches in a nonconference match at Northridge.

Yale is 6-4. Northridge is 6-7.
