Baseball : Mike Arroyos Tosses a No-Hitter and Saddleback Wins, 5-0

Mike Arroyos threw a no-hitter, facing just 21 batters, as Saddleback High School defeated Newport Harbor, 5-0, in a Sea View League baseball game at Newport Harbor.

Arroyos (2-0), a right-hander, struck out four and walked none. Newport Harbor had two runners reach base on errors, but both were erased by double plays.

Pat O’Hearn went 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs for Saddleback (6-2, 2-0). Frank Larriva also drove in two runs.

Kirk Summers (0-3) took the loss for Newport Harbor (1-7, 0-2).

In other Sea View League games:

Corona del Mar 3, University 2 (9 innings)--Corona del Mar (3-4, 1-1) used three walks, a sacrifice and an a error to score the winning run at home. Clay Carpenter and Greg Haack walked to open the ninth and Rich Mather sacrificed them to second and third. Mitch Melbon was walked intentionally and John MacMillian hit a ground ball to second. Carpenter was forced at the plate but University catcher Dave Dieter’s throw sailed into right field to allow Haack to score the winning run. Haack also had a sacrifice fly in the sixth to tie it, 2-2.

Tustin 4, Estancia 2--Pete Brower broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run double in the fifth inning for host Tustin (6-2, 2-0). Danny Baker (2-0) threw a six-hitter, striking out four for the victory.

In the Sunset League:

Fountain Valley 4, Huntington Beach 3--John Dal Poggetto hit a two-run home run in the third inning and scored the winning run in the fifth to lead Fountain Valley (5-5, 1-1) to the come-from-behind victory at home.

Huntington Beach took an early lead as Dominic Alvarez hit a three-run home run in the top of the third inning. But Dal Poggetto, a senior first baseman, hit his two-run homer to bring Fountain Valley to within one (3-2).

In the fifth inning, Mark Dodd singled in Brad Futak for the Barons’ tying run and Dal Poggetto scored on an error.

Winning pitcher Steve Montgomery (2-3) struck out 11 and gave up 8 hits including the three-run home run. Tim Wimbish (3-1) allowed three hits and struck out three in 5 1/2 innings for the loss.

Huntington Beach (10-2, 1-1), ranked third in the Orange County Sportswriters’ Assn. baseball poll, played without two starters: center fielder Brian Mena, who is sick, and second baseman Gerad Cawhorn, who broke his arm Monday when he was hit by a pitch during batting practice.

Ocean View 2, Marina 2 (10 innings)--Steve Gio doubled home the tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning for Marina (4-4-1, 0-1-1). The game was called because of darkness. Scott Brenner drove in a run for Ocean View (4-4-1, 1-0-1), which scored its second run on a passed ball.

Westminster 1, Edison 0--Brian Stubbs (3-0), who has an earned-run average of 0.43 scattered three hits for a complete-game shutout for host Westminster (6-3, 1-1). Westminster’s Dax Hammers stole home on a double-steal in the third inning for the game’s only run.

In the Academy League:

Whitney 13, Liberty Christian 1--Mark Fischer went 2 for 4 with a home run and 3 RBIs for Whitney (4-6, 1-0) at TeWinkle Park. John Van Dyke drove in a run for Liberty Christian (4-3, 1-1).

In the Century League:

Foothill 8, Canyon 6--Visiting Foothill (5-3, 1-1) scored five runs in the first on four hits and four Canyon (6-2, 1-1) errors to gain a quick lead. Foothill’s Eric Garcia had two hits and two RBIs, and Mike Higgins (2-2) picked up the victory. Kent Donnely got his first save, retiring five of the six batters he faced.

Santa Ana 7, Villa Park 2--Jesse Rosas (2-1) gave up two hits in six innings for host Santa Ana. John Watrous took the loss (1-2). Oscar Luna and Ruben Gomez had two hits each and Luna and Julio Vargas had two RBIs each for Santa Ana.

El Modena 8, Santa Ana Valley 6--Despite committing seven errors, El Modena (4-5, 2-0) remained undefeated in league play. The score was tied, 6-6, in the bottom of the sixth, when El Modena’s Matt Neubrand led off with a single. Marcus Esposito followed with a double and then Todd Hively hit his two-run single.

In the Empire League:

Katella 15, Cypress 2--Eric Meunier had four hits and two RBIs and Jeremy Sherman had three hits and two RBIs for Katella (5-4, 1-1) at Cypress.

Loara 6, Esperanza 0--Brian McGaughey (1-1) allowed four hits, three by Jim Short, but no runs for host Loara (4-4, 1-1). Kenny Williams went 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs for Loara. Esperanza is 5-4 and 1-1.

Los Alamitos 11, El Dorado 10 (8 innings)--El Dorado pitcher Kent Kieffer balked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eight, allowing the winning run to score, as host Los Alamitos upset the No. 1-ranked Hawks.

Greg Pirkle led off the inning with a single and Mike Kelley followed by reaching base on an error, which left runners on second and third. After Matt Moore was intentionally walked, Kieffer (1-1) balked. Tony Muser (2-0) pitched 1 innings in relief for the victory. Sal Mancuso went 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs for Los Alamitos (8-1, 2-0). Eddie Keller went 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs for El Dorado (8-2, 1-1).

In the Express League:

Claremont 17, Calvary Baptist 1--Derrick Evans (1-0) struck out 13 and gave up 1 hit in five innings for Claremont (2-2, 1-0) at Brookhurst Park. Evans also homered in the first inning.

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 3, Brethren 0--Ward Lookabaugh threw a five-hitter for host Orange Lutheran (8-3, 1-0). Lookabaugh (5-0) struck out six in recording his fifth consecutive complete-game victory.

Whittier Christian 3, Capistrano Valley Christian 2 (9 innings)--Brent Tucker hit a home run in the ninth for visiting Whittier Christian (2-4, 1-0). Kevin Kepner took the loss, and Brent Arrigia got the victory. Bret Biegert had two hits, including a double, and two steals for Capistrano Valley Christian (4-2, 0-1).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 1, Woodbridge 0--Mike Smedes scored on a wild pitch in the sixth for host Laguna Hills. Smedes was also the winning pitcher, throwing a one-hitter with seven strikeouts and one walk.

Laguna Beach 14, Costa Mesa 6--Ted Savage went 2 for 4 with a grand slam in the third inning for the Artists (1-5, 1-1) at home. David Salladay hit a two-run homer in the fifth for Costa Mesa. Neil Collins (1-1) gave up six hits and struck out five for the victory.

In the South Coast League:

Dana Hills 4, Capistrano Valley 3--Lance Mark hit a two-run homer in the third to break a 2-2 tie for host Dana Hills (7-2, 2-0). Ryan Henderson (1-1) went six innings for the victory, with Ricky Whipple pitching the final inning for the save. Bill Barden had a two-run double for Capistrano Valley (2-6, 0-2).

Irvine 5, Mission Viejo 2--Relief pitcher Jim Hunpsburger saved the victory for Kevin Obergfell at Irvine. Hunpsburger entered the game in the sixth inning with runners on second and third and no outs. He worked out of the jam and went two innings, striking out three, for the save. Brian Goldstein went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs for Irvine (6-2, 2-0). Troy Cobb and Derek Gingerich each drove in runs for Mission Viejo (5-2, 0-2), which committed six errors.

San Clemente 7, El Toro 3--Mark Broccardo went 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and 4 RBIs for San Clemente (4-3, 1-1). Billy Mitchell (1-0) went the distance, striking out four, for the victory.

In nonleague play:

Army-Navy 15, St. Margaret’s 5--Kevin Cargile went 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs for Army-Navy at St. Margaret’s. Jeff Hilgers went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs for St. Margaret’s.
