Erickson’s Run Caps CSUN Softball Sweep

Lisa Erickson scored the winning run in the ninth inning of the second game as Cal State Northridge recorded a sweep against Oregon State with a 3-2 victory in a nonconference softball doubleheader Wednesday at CSUN.

With the score tied, 2-2, Erickson singled and advanced to third on Lisa Martin’s sacrifice bunt. She scored on Beth Onestinghel’s groundout.

CSUN (19-9) won the first game, 5-0, behind the six-hit pitching of Debbie Dickmann.

Dickmann allowed a leadoff double to Kris Kamrath and did not give up another extra-base hit in pitching a complete game. Dickmann (7-2) struck out six and walked none.

In another softball game:

Southern Utah State 1, Cal Lutheran 0--Sondra Reese stole home in the fourth inning for what turned out to be the game-winning run in a nonconference game at Cal Lutheran. Reese singled, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on Heather Hobbs’ single to right. Cal Lutheran’s DeeAndra Pilkington struck out 10 and pitched a four-hitter but took the loss. Pilkington (4-4) struck out seven of the first nine batters. Cal Lutheran (6-3) had three singles.

BASEBALL

The Master’s 16, Puget Sound (Tacoma, Wash.) 12--The Mustangs broke open a close game with a nine-run sixth inning in the nonconference game at Master’s.

Tim Kane was 3 for 6 with two RBIs and Tony Ellis was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI for Master’s (14-15). David Mayr had two singles and knocked in four runs and Mark MacArthur was 2 for 3 with three RBIs.

Starter Eric Petersen allowed five hits and struck out four in five innings to pick up the win.

MEN’S TENNIS

Pierce 8, Glendale 1--The Brahmas won their 10th consecutive Western State Conference match of the season and their 38th consecutive conference win since 1985.

Pierce (11-0-1 overall, 10-0 in conference play) won every match except in No. 1 doubles. In that match, the Brahmas’ Bill Kearsley and Mauricio Quiroga were defeated by Glendale’s team of Jaime Garcia and Scott Smith.

“I still think the match may been closer than the scores of the games indicate,” Pierce Coach Paul Xanthos said.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pierce d. Westmont, 12-15, 15-7, 15-4, 15-4--Led by Matt Bellers’ 23 kills and 12 by Rico Guimaraes, Pierce rallied in the South Coast Conference match at Pierce. Terry Schrumpf added 11 kills for Pierce (10-1, 8-1).
