Kentucky Tennis Team Beats USD in Tournament

The University of San Diego’s Dan Mattera and Mark Farren both won, but No. 6-ranked Kentucky beat the Toreros, 5-2, in the first round of the Blue-Gray national collegiate tennis tournament in Montgomery, Ala., Thursday.

Mattera beat Adam Malik in the No. 4 match, 6-4, 7-6. In the No. 5 match, Farren beat Willy Laban, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6.

Unseeded USD (13-8) will meet No. 8-seed Auburn today in the consolation round.

Jill Greenwood and Hillary Hobel won a tight match at No. 2 doubles to help the University of San Diego (9-7) rally past Utah, 5-4.

USD was down, 2-4, after singles play but swept the doubles.

Greenwood and Hobel topped Kristin Siegmund and Liz Fox, 7-6, 2-6, 7-6. The final tiebreaker was decided, 14-12.

BASEBALL

U.S. International University third baseman Jerry Benavides drove in two runs and scored the game-winner on a wild pitch as USIU defeated visiting Western Oregon State, 11-5, in a nonconference game.

Benavides hit his third home run of the season in the fourth inning with no one on. In the seventh, he doubled and broke a 5-5 tie when loser Kyle Tucker threw a wild pitch. Benavides also drove in a run with a squeeze bunt in the eighth.

Wally Trice (6-3) allowed two runs in 1 innings but got the victory for USIU (11-18-1). Teammate Ray Plantier was 3 for 4 with two doubles. Western Oregon State is 5-14.

SOFTBALL

USIU defeated second-ranked Cal State Fullerton, 3-2, in the 15-team Pony tournament in Fullerton. The Gulls also beat Oregon State, 3-0.

In the victory over Fullerton, the Gulls scored all three of their runs in the third inning. Kelly Winkler and Michelle Hagen hit doubles, and Karen Winkler (7-10) earned the victory.

In the first game, Nora Flores (4-5) threw a two-hit shutout and Shannon Riley went 2 for 3 and scored twice for USIU.

The Gulls (12-15) continue tournament play today against Texas A&M; and No. 19 Minnesota.

GOLF
