High School Spring Sports : Rosselli’s 5-Hitter Helps Alemany Back Onto the Winning Track, 8-2

Alemany pitcher Brian Rosselli tossed a five-hitter and struck out 10 as the Indians snapped a four-game losing streak with an 8-2 Del Rey League victory over St. Francis (1-2 in league play).

Rosselli (3-1, 1-1) walked three and did not allow an earned run.

Alemany (7-4, 1-2 in league) led, 3-2, going into the bottom of the fifth but scored five runs, two on a double by John Lite.

Mark Scott and Bill Horvat each had two hits for Alemany.

Thousand Oaks 10, Westlake 8--Westlake’s John Wandzilak was thrown out attempting to advance to second base on an error to end the Warriors’ rally in a Marmonte League game at Westlake.

Trailing, 10-7, entering the bottom of the seventh, Westlake scored an unearned run when Thousand Oaks first baseman Scott Hafner dropped shortstop Steve Sisco’s throw. Mike Suarez scored from third, but Wandzilak was cut down while trying to move into scoring position.

Thousand Oaks (1-1 in league play), struck for five runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-4 lead and chase Westlake starter Mike Eby. Darren Shoen hit a three-run home run off reliever John Brookman to cap the inning.

Westlake (5-5, 1-2) tied the score in the bottom of the inning with the help of a two-run home run by Suarez, but the Lancers added a run in the sixth with a solo home run by Mike Yanuzzi and two unearned runs in the seventh.

Notre Dame 19, Bosco Tech 3--The Knights exploded for 20 hits off four Bosco Tech pitchers in the Del Rey League game at Bosco Tech.

Rob Kostebader was 3 for 3 with 5 RBIs, Bobby Hughes was 3 for 4 with 3 doubles, 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored, and Chad Ratliff was 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Teammate Steve Martinez was 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs, including a two-run home run in the seventh inning.

The Knights (6-4, 2-0) also got some timely defense from their infield, which turned three double plays.

Bosco Tech is 2-1.

Hart 16, Burroughs 2--Hart improved to 9-0, 3-0 in the Foothill League with a 17-hit attack.

Jason Edwards gave up 2 hits and struck out 13 in 6 innings to improve to 5-3. Edwards also was 2 for 2 with an RBI. Joe DeSchryver was 4 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Jay Sanford (2 for 5, 3 RBIs), Darren Tsukashima (3 for 6, 1 RBI), Ray Gardocki (2 for 4, 1 RBI) and Casey Burrill (2 for 2, 2 RBIs) all inflated their batting averages.

Hart struck for three runs on four hits to open a 6-0 lead after three innings, then extended the margin with a seven-run outburst in the sixth.

Rio Mesa 7, Oxnard 3--Dmitri Young had two hits, including a two-run home run, in a Channel League game at Rio Mesa. Juan Cuellar (2 for 4) and David Frazier (3 for 4) also had multiple-hit games for Rio Mesa (5-2-1, 2-0-1). Robert Ayala ran his record to 4-0, striking out five and walking one.

San Gabriel 9, Burbank 5--Wayne Schull was 2 for 4 with two RBIs for Burbank, but the Bulldogs (4-4, 0-3) dropped the Foothill League game at San Gabriel.

Chaminade 8, Pater Noster 2--Two Chaminade players came off the bench to lead the Eagles to a Santa Fe League win at Pater Noster.

Wade Rockwood pitched 3 innings of no-hit relief to win his first decision of the season. In the fourth inning, Rockwood replaced starter Chris DeCristo, who had loaded the bases, and retired the side, yielding a run on a groundout. Steve Marshall replaced injured catcher Mike LeCocq in the batting order and belted a three-run home run in the third inning for the game-winning RBI and a 5-1 lead.

Pater Noster took a 1-0 lead in the first with two singles and a walk.

St. Genevieve 12, Salesian 0--Joe Cascione, who was 3 for 5 with two RBIs, singled home two runs to highlight a five-run inning as host St. Genevieve (9-1, 3-0) remained undefeated in Santa Fe League play.

Aiden Miller surrendered two singles with six strikeouts for a complete-game win. Miller improved his record to 3-0.

Joe Chaparro was 3 for 5 and singled home two runs in the Valiants’ six-run third. Dan Alvarez was 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

Harvard 3, La Salle 1--Bryan Jacobsen and David Lee combined on a three-hitter and Robby Thayer had three hits as the Saracens won a Santa Fe League game at Harvard.

Jacobsen (2-2) gave up two hits and five walks in six innings and Lee pitched the seventh inning to earn his first save. Buck Robinson made a running backhanded catch in left field with the tying runs aboard in the seventh.

“It was a game-saving catch,” Harvard Coach Jim Brink said.

Robinson also scored Harvard’s first run and Thayer knocked in Oscar Rodriguez for the game-winning run.

Bell-Jeff 11, Cathedral 3--The Guards scored eight runs in the first two innings, then coasted to a Santa Fe League victory at Cathedral.

Alex Vucurevic and Mike Cesta each had three hits and Greg Issacson added two hits for Bell-Jeff (4-4-1, 3-1).

Issacson, who was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs, hit a two-out, two-run triple in the first inning to ignite the rout.

Vucurevic, who raised his pitching record to 1-1, was 3 for 3 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored, He also stole a base. Cesta was 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. He had a single, double and triple.

Santa Paula 4, Agoura 3--Chris Cole, who had three of Santa Paula’s four hits, scored with one out in the bottom of the seventh on a squeeze bunt to give the Cardinals a Frontier League victory at Santa Paula.

Nelson Townes had three hits and two stolen bases for Agoura (3-3-1, 0-2-1).

Simi Lutheran 12, Newbridge 2--Bill Mueller fired a four-hitter and struck out 10 batters to lead Simi Lutheran to a nonleague victory over Newbridge. Mueller (3-0) allowed just one earned run. Derek Osaki doubled, tripled and drove in three runs for Simi Lutheran (5-1). Doug Marion (3 for 4, 5 steals) and Brian Bittner (3 for 4, 4 steals) also had big afternoons for Simi Lutheran.

Highland Hall 10, Queen of Angels 8--Catcher Seth Ernsdorf broke an 8-8 tie with a two-out run-scoring single in the sixth inning to lead Highland Hall to a nonleague victory at Queen of Angels. Ernsdorf was 4 for 4 with 4 RBIs and 3 steals. Highland Hall (4-4) stole 11 bases.

Grace Community 12, California Christian 9--Jeff Fennell’s three-run triple in the fifth powered Grace Community to the nonleague victory in a game shortened to five innings because of darkness. Sophomore Chad Hankinson was 4 for 4 for Grace Community (3-5) and John Fennell added a two-run triple.

SOFTBALL

Notre Dame 2, Burbank 0--The Knights managed only two hits, but they were enough for a nonleague win at Notre Dame.

Simona Errico grounded out to score Tracy Benn with Notre Dame’s first run. Becca Berline scored later in the inning on a passed ball.

Berline (8-2) surrendered five hits and pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Burbank 11, La Canada 7--Mark Nielsen, Burbank’s No. 1 singles player, was a three-set winner over Jeremy Milbrodth (6-1), Brandt Lincoln (6-0) and Dennis Woo (6-2) as Burbank won a nonleague match at home. Burbank (8-0) won six of nine singles matches.

Burbank’s No. 1 doubles team of Al Lewis and Ron Allen won three matches. La Canada’s Brandon Ornelas and C. J. Milbrodth won two doubles matches.
