Share

Sophomore Miguel Galaz needed one swing on Saturday to help Mary Star’s baseball team avoid what was developing into a miserable week.

The Stars, who lost a nine-inning game to St. Monica in a Camino Real League opener on Wednesday and suffered a 15-0 non-league defeat to Miraleste on Friday, appeared headed for another setback when Serra scored four runs in the top of the seventh to take an 8-7 lead.

However, Galaz hit a two-run homer with one out in the bottom of the seventh to give Mary Star a 9-8 league victory at Fromhold Field in San Pedro. The Stars improved to 1-1 in the league, 7-5 overall.

Serra (1-1, 4-8) took the lead in the seventh when Chris Jones’ bases-loaded single to center scored three runs.

Brubeck, who helped Mary Star build an early lead with a three-run homer in the third, led off the bottom of the seventh with a single. One out later, Galaz hit his first varsity home run.

Redondo 5, Glendale 0--Senior right-hander Scott Davison pitched a two-hitter with 16 strikeouts and hit a two-run homer to lead the Sea Hawks (10-1) in the first round of the Babe Herman Tournament at Stengel Field in Glendale.

Davison, who brought an 0.50 ERA into the game, improved to 5-0 with his fifth complete game and third shutout. His fourth home run of the season came in the top of the seventh inning and capped Redondo’s scoring. Dane McKay had two hits for the Sea Hawks.

Redondo will play either Kennedy or Rio Mesa in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Monday at Stengel Field.

Banning 9, Santa Ana 7--The Pilots scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning en route to a come-from-behind win in the first round of the Santa Ana Elks Tournament. Rick Bernal led Banning (7-2) with six RBI and three hits.

Gardena 7, Marshall 3--Kevin Katashima had three RBI, Yong Kim improved his pitching record to 3-0 and center fielder Aman Hicks made a key defensive play to help the Mohicans to a first-round win in the Goodman Tournament at Cal State Los Angeles.

With Gardena leading 6-3, Marshall had runners at first and second with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning when the batter hit a deep fly to left-center field. Hicks made a running catch and doubled up the runner off second to end the inning.

Katashima helped Gardena (4-2) take an early lead with a two-run double and a sacrifice fly.

Bishop Amat 7, Bishop Montgomery 4--The Knights staked ace right-hander Jon Newville to a 4-0 lead after three innings, but Newville, making his first start since suffering a strained groin muscle last week, couldn’t hold it as Bishop Amat rallied for an Angelus League win at home.

The Knights dropped to 1-2 in league and 3-4 overall, while the Lancers improved to 2-1 and 8-1.

Bishop Montgomery scored three runs in the third on a two-run homer by Erik Russell and a solo shot by Bill Harvey.
