Hagen’s Hitting Leads USIU to Softball Sweep
Michelle Hagen went 4 for 6 with six RBIs as United States International University swept visiting Nevada Reno in a nonconference softball doubleheader Monday.
Nora Flores (7-5) pitched a four-hitter to lead USIU to an 11-0 victory in the first game, which was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule. Karen Winkler (9-12) allowed three hits as USIU won the second game, 7-0.
Hagen had three triples, including two in the fourth inning of the first game. USIU is 16-17, Nevada Reno 5-23.
TENNIS
Doubles team Joe Thomas and David Mercado defeated previously undefeated Ronny Lemvall and Carlos Zuniga to lead Grossmont College to a 5-3 victory over visiting Alvin Junior College of Texas.
Alvin is ranked fourth in the country. Thomas also defeated Gustavo Espinosa, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Grossmont (14-3) is ranked No. 1 in the state.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Melinda Ainslie won the No. 1 singles match, 6-1, 6-4, and teamed with Traci Reynolds for another victory as Point Loma Nazarene College beat visiting Mills College, 9-0.
