Prep Roundup : Chula Vista Splits Games in Las Vegas Tournament

The Chula Vista High School baseball team split two games Friday at the Cowboy Classic in Las Vegas.

The Spartans opened with an 8-2 victory over Boulder City, Nev., then lost, 12-10, to Basic, Nev.

Eric Slinkard hit a home run in the first game to pace Chula Vista’s nine-hit attack. The Spartans also benefited from four Boulder City errors. Carlos Pedroza won the game with relief help from Gerard Galvan.

In the second game, Basic scored 12 runs on 16 hits off three Chula Vista pitchers. J.J. Rodriguez and Pedroza hit home runs for Chula Vista.

In other Cowboys Classic games:

Pleasant Grove (Utah) 12, Bonita Vista 6--Pleasant Grove, the defending Utah state champion, took advantage of 12 walks and 7 wild pitches by four Bonita Vista pitchers. David Tappan hit his second home run of the season for Bonita Vista (8-4) in the second inning with two on to give the Barons a 6-5 lead. Pleasant Grove scored 12 runs on 5 hits, led by David Slinders, who was 2 for 4. Tappan was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and catcher Jeff Narlock was 2 for 2 for Bonita Vista, which concludes tournament play with a game today.

Carlsbad 15, Western (Nev.) 5--Bryan Black and Jeff Meyers hit homers and Carlsbad had 16 hits in the game. Leading, 8-5, in the sixth inning, Carlsbad broke the game open with seven runs.

Valley (Nev.) 4, Mt. Carmel 3--Valley scored in the bottom of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie to defeat Mt. Carmel. Ron Kelly, the last of four Mt. Carmel pitchers, took the loss. Sundevil shortstop Eric Olander hit a home run.

SWIMMING

Mike Picotte of Mira Mesa won the Trophy Dash at the seven-team Mt. Carmel Invitational, edging Lars Jorgensen of Mt. Carmel. Times in the 100-meter butterfly, the 200-meter freestyle and the 200-meter individual medley were combined to determine a winner. Picotte had 278.94 seconds; Jorgensen was second at 279.97.

Picotte had the fastest time in the 100 butterfly (54.52), the fastest in the 200 free (1:44.25) and the second-fastest in the 200 IM (2:00.15). Jorgensen, who placed fourth in the 800- and 1,500-meter freestyles last week at the U.S. Swimming Indoor National Championships at Orlando, Fla., had the fastest time in the 200 IM (1:59.33).

Jason Beedle of Mt. Carmel was third at 296.78.

Kristin Winn of Mission Viejo won the girls’ Trophy Dash with three impressive times. She won the 100 butterfly in 59.89. Her times in the 200 free (1:53.50) and 200 IM (2:09.70) are better than the All-American standards. Winn’s combined time was 303.09 seconds.

Susan Sheridan of Mission Viejo was second at 322.81. Shirley Kim of Rancho Buena Vista was third at 328.81.
