Brian Stanton Clears 7-5 in High Jump
Brian Stanton set a meet and stadium record in the high jump, and Abilene Christian’s Cam Miller broke the meet record in the pole vault to highlight Saturday night’s ninth annual Sun Angel track and field meet.
Stanton, competing for the Stars and Stripes Track Club, jumped 7 feet 5 inches to top the previous meet and stadium record of 7-4 1/2, set by James Frazier in 1984 and tied last year by Lee Balkin of Stars and Stripes. Miller’s vault of 18-0 1/2 bettered the previous meet mark of 17-9, set by Greg Woepse in 1984.
The meet lost some of its luster earlier in the week when Carl Lewis and Danny Harris both dropped out of the competition. Harris, a three-time winner in the NCAA’s 400-meter intermediate hurdles, strained a hamstring last weekend. Lewis and his Santa Monica Track Club scratched from both the 400- and 800-meter relays because of a foot fracture suffered by teammate Floyd Heard.
