After six weeks on the road, the Tyrone Jeffries Show returned home to the Northridge Invitational at Cal State Northridge.

Jeffries, who had run in such exotic venues as Bakersfield, Long Beach and Palo Alto in recent weeks, dashed Saturday to personal bests in the 200 and 400 meters.

The sophomore from Muir High won the second heat of the 400 in 48.05 seconds and was victorious in the first heat of the 200 in 21.51.

The times moved Jeffries, a Division II All-American in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 1987, to 10th on the all-time CSUN lists in both events.

He is also tied for second in the 110-meter high hurdles (14.22), fourth in the 400 intermediates (51.98) and tied for seventh in the 100 (10.4) on the all-time Northridge lists.

“All the hard work in the off-season is starting to pay off,” CSUN Coach Don Strametz said. “He’s just getting stronger every week.”

Jeffries was not the only sprinter to move up on the CSUN list.

Kevin Hendrix, a sophomore from Roosevelt High in Fresno, won the first heat of the 400 in 47.66, moving to sixth on the all-time Northridge list.

Darren Bernard of Cal Lutheran, a freshman from Thousand Oaks High, qualified for the NAIA national championships with a 47.78 victory in the third heat of the 400.

Alonzo Babers of Air Force, the 1984 Olympic champion, had the fastest time of the day with a 46.70 victory in his heat.
